when we got our 310 the back main carpet in the cockpit was flaking black and sticking to deck not to mention the front had completely separated from the backing in spots.

our answer was to purchase all new carpet from snap in carpet here on the sight.

i brought the old home and after reading some other posts on the subject decided to take a run at refurbishing ours. nothing to loose.

found a post here that recommend fiber-loc non skid RUG BACKING. thank you to who ever you are. gerry ordered some up and i went to work.

the first step was to shampoo front with here bissel home steam cleaner. i then rinsed with a garden hose till all signs of soap were gone on both sides of carpet.

let dry for a day and tackled the black backing with stiff scrub brush working off as much of the loose and crumbly backing as i could. this turned into a black dusty mess.
will add, all work was done out side in our driveway.
any way got house vacuum with brush to clean up. running this over the backing not only sucked up the fine black dust but cleaned all of the flaking backing off.

next start applying new backing material. this stuff stinks and comes out of the container in a consistency of thick white latex paint. i slathered it into the de-lamated spots and was able to get threads to stick and stay back together by holding my 3" paint brush straight up and down and dabbing them down.
it says if using 2 coats to reapply with in 12 hours. after 5 hours in the direct sun i did apply a second coat.

next day was able to trim bottom end and re-hem and re install the binding material. this was the hardest step as gerry's sewing machine was barely able to punch the needle threw and open wide enough for the material.

if you dont let yours get frayed to edge and can eliminate this step you are way ahead of the game.

this turned out way better than gerry or i looked for when starting out.
if any one is interested i have more pix and more how i worked. trying to do short recap here.

just need to see how it will stand up to water and sun. container says i can be used to make rugs non skid so thinking it will work. have drowned with the hose here at home 3 days in a row and dries right out with no effect.

i priced at the local upholstery shop and they would have sewn the binding back on for me for $20.
as that wasn't my focus i didn't worry to much about it.

i just want to see if this will be an effective way to save the black backed carpets that are still in good shape on the top.
not shown in the pix is another spot on the backing that wasn't in to bad of shape but i could tell it had some ware and the finish had a dull flat black color as apposed to a black shinny finish where the backing was in good condition. i put one coat of product i there to see if it would prevent it from getting worse and flaking.

please note; the sewing on the binding isn't straight or looks well. it was all i could do to get that part done.

trying to show how well the backing bonded back after being completely de-lamated

this is, just after applying first coat and is still wet

Had the same issue. As long as the carpet snaps in, use duck tape on the damaged area and voila the backing was sealed underneath and no further black stains.
Dries normally too. Thanks Bolivar!!

did mine with balck durabak roll-on rubber paint 2 years ago with no sign of failure. They are sturdy and plyable.
yes; i saw a post form someone with a pix. could well have been you.
i was going to order the durabak in a gray as it could be used for other things as well.

gerry ordered the other stuff so thats what i rolled with.

How about posting some "after" pics of the back of the carpet so we can see what it looks like.

Does the stuff you used give the same kind of "non slip" surface the black rubber did? How flexible is the black stuff you put on? Do you forsee any problems with bending the carpet?

Any downside to the material you used? How about some information on the material you used?

as that info is in my post you must be asking about the black material dpvandy01 used?????

if not yes, it is as or more flexible than the original. yes it stickier and has better anti skid properties than original.

the stuff i used is called--- fiber-lok non-skid RUG BACKING--- thats the way the lable appears on the jar.
the label goes on to say. natural rubber--easy to apply-- keeps rugs where they belong

this is it

Garry,
Thanks for the post. I think some people had trouble following it because you used a white backing material and they were expecting black. I was able to follow it and found it informative!
