how to choose a broker

If, by sell short, you mean sell for less than I owe, then that's exactly what I expect to do. Because, I want to move on.

Short means what ever the price needs to be to move it. What you owe, have in it, want to get, what NADA lists it for, has no bearing on the price. The price it needs to be, is what gets attention and brings offers. I know it will be painful. Now is not the time to sell a boat unless you are willing to take a beating.

I'm not trying to beat you up, and appologize if it is coming off that way. I just see people getting so mad about what buyers are offering. (a friend is a broker) It's not fair, and offends me too! I'm to emotional about this whole subject but watching sellers bicker with my friend the broker as he tells sellers the same thing is maddening.

boat broker = used car salesman.... be carefull and do your homework on what your boat will sell for in your area this time of year :)

Sold a boat with a local broker this year. It was great. I didn't have to deal with horsetrading, craigslist dreamers or a bunch of lookie lous. I used a dealer I had dealt with in the past because they treated me well as a buyer. They were knoweledgeable and professional. All paperwork was in order. They recommended a fair market price for my boat and it was sold in one month. They sold it through internet listings to a buyer in Georgia. I'm in Louisville, Ky. I didn't have to give up evenings showing the boat or weekends giving test rides. In fact the service manager gave the buyer a test ride. I paid extra for that but didn't have to miss work or give up time off.

I believe all future boat sales will be by broker. Well worth the 10% to me.

Man you are so right.

Except....as a seller, you want a good used car...er boar salesperson. They will do their best to make light the fact that the seller has missed alot of the maintenance, broken widgets, mistreated things, they will redirect attention on how fun, and enjoyable the boat will be. They do a good job covering up all the things you as a owner/seller should have been doing all along. So yes, sellers need a good salesperson. BUT, if your price is not right they cannot help you no matter how hard they try!

I wanted to say I am NOT saying the OP's boat has any issues or the like. I am responding the the boat broker = used car salesman.

Accurate pricing is only part of it. Being available and professional with potential buyers is important too. There are several brokerage only dealers in our area. It's like some marina rats with a cell phone and a few of those plastic board signs they hang on a boat. No real location or buisness hours.

Deal with someone that treated you well and they will most likely treat your buyer well.

This applies to more than just boat sales. MM

I eventually listed the boat with HMY Yacht Sales. They have a very comprehensive web site and numerous offices along the East Coast. This particular broker knows Sea Rays very well, and has won numerous sales awards over the years. Also, he was thorough and easy to work with.

Here's what happened to the others.

Marine Max was too far away, and wanted to delegate showing the boat to somebody around here.

Broker A wanted me to put the boat on a cradle in his lot for $325 a month, and it would be sitting near another 310 Sundancer that he was selling himself.

Broker B said that his foreign contacts were wholesalers, looking to resell at a profit.
