How to Change Oil in 8.1

I took the second one to show the room in the back of the ER in the 340.

A friend says to John's wife: "Hey, where did John go?"

Wife: "Oh, he's back in his club house again... He's back there for hours sometimes. Lord only knows what he's doing back there!"

PS: Nice, "mechanic's suit", John! I need to get me one of those:smt001

PSS: Nice write up. I'll have to try the "break the seal thing". I've usually had good luck with popping a hole in the filter, but you got my curiosity up.

John - ROFLMAO! The one time I got in that position - on my side between the engines - I almost didn't get out!!!

Oh the "charlie horses"!!!

Can't be Clausterophobic in there.

Thanks for the info on the "cool fuel", never heard of that! I mentioned I have an in-line fuel filter for the Gen Set located next to the stbd fuel tank. Looked at the set today and it looks like an in-line filter inside the gen set housing. Why have 2 in-line fuel filters on the gen set?

The only thing I do different is that I have a five gallon gas can for the OLD OIL. Unfortunately the Jabsco unit does not hold the oil from both engines. So I do the SB side first, actually the genny first, then the SB engine. Unload the oil into my 5 gallon gas can. Then do the port side and unload that oil into the five gallon gas can. This way my Jabsco is empty and I can take the gas can on my way back to Autozone and dump it. I also use it to do my cars at home and store the oil until it is getting full and then I take it to Autozone to dump.

Actually I leave the Jabsco hooked up after I sucked the oil out and then remove the oil filter. Somehow there is still a half a qt. of oild raining once you unseated the filters. then when I have the old filter off and the new ones mounted, i once more turn the Jabsco pump on to suck the rest out, take it off and move to the next engine.

On the genny I take the drain hose cap off and use the small clear plastic hose with a fitting. I push it into the drain hose until it goes into the genny oil pan and then suck it dry.

I use Castrol GTX High Mileage 20W-50 in my engines. It's a great oil with tons of additives. Walmart sells it for $12-14 per 5 qt. container. I get 4 jugs and have 2 qts. left over at the end. I change my oil every 25 hours so about twice a year and this way it is resonable.

I like that idea. The only problem is that 5 gallons is heavy but I carry it in, I guess I can carry it out.

Holy Cow John, I envy you for being able to squeeze between the engines like that. When I change the inline filter on other's boats, I have to do it by laying on top of the engines. I think that I would get to claustrophobic to try to get between them.

I can't change the inline filters from there. I can't see anything that close 8 )

I do get down there behind them, though.

Are you laying on top of the bilge pumps? MY pumps are between the stringers and it's kind of messy around them.

There is a solid piece on the floor of the bilge between the stringers and forward of the aft bilge pump. I'm laying on that. It elevates the floor to a level that is above the max water level for the lower pump, so if you have water down there, the top of the piece remains dry as the water travels around either side.

Good post John....it is so easy to do with the Jabsco pump. I noticed in your pics, you used the screw on garden hose fitting. Have you always used that fitting or have you tried the small tube that fits down the dipstick tube? I tried the small tube down the dipstick this fall(for the 1st time)...and I think I almost liked it better than the garden hose fitting...but the pump instrutions say not to pump the oil back out thru the smaller tube. Just wondering what method others with the Jabsco Porta quick use....

I use the smaller tube for the transmissions.
