I am going to change the anti-freeze this week in my 8.1s. I forgot to grab the owners manual for the engines before I left the boat last Sunday. :smt021 I looked online and here and can not find the answer to the question: how many gallons of anti-freeze for the engine?

Thanks!

Best,

It is a real pain to get the fluid out. There are two drain plugs, one on each side of the block down low. On mine, one side is partially blocked by the oil cooler and the other side, by the raw water line going to the tranny cooler. The plugs are painted black the same as the block and have a hex center but will also fit a 19mm socket. Good luck in getting a socket to fit in the area without taking hoses/coolers off!

There must be a better way. let me know if you find it!

I've drained my stb engine, but not my port due to the plugs being obscured. I'll be making another attempt over winter when I can take my time in removing the other parts in the way of the plugs. Once off, I will be checking to see if I can replace them with some other fitting that can have a hose attached for easier draining.

Happy wrenching!

Travis340 and Jimmybuoy - I do have a better way to get the old stuff out - I pay my mechanic to do it

Best,

I hear ya Sea Wolff, and that's just what the previous owner did.

Funny thing is... his mechanic managed to majically take the plugs out of both engines without marking the paint or the hex socket in any way. Hmmmmm... Could it be that he took a shortcut and simply drained the system by taking off the easily accessible water pump hose and topped up the system with fresh AF?? If so, that would leave half of the old AF in the system, but who would ever know? Na - that would NEVER happen!

But even if they went to the trouble of repainting the drain plugs, there would be some evidence of a socket or hex wrench - there was neither.

Anyway, I like a challenge or I'm just plain stubborn!!
