There's a guy at our yacht club that has over 3500hrs on Mercruiser 454s in a 1985 Wellcraft Gran Sport. He bought the boat new. Heads have never been removed and the boat is water stored every winter unwrapped. I know this sounds impossible but I have been a member for 11 years and know the resident mechanic that has maintained the boat since new. Rumor has it he bought a new boat recently but not sure.

With 15 gallons of water and 3/4 fuel in each tank, three of us on boat, @ 4500 rpms we run at or about 46 in optimal sea conditions. Normally cruise at 32mph (28 knots) @ 3500rpms.

It's all in the operation and maintenance of the engines. Unfortunately many boat owners neglect their engines (as well as other parts) and don't do anything until something breaks or starts performing badly.

Keep a maintenance schedule, be proactive on engine care and operate the engines in a proper manner and there is no reason they can't accumulate many, many hours of good service.

Before we bought in September, the marine mechanic who worked on this boat for PO, said in past he worked on commercial small craft in southern California for 15yrs before coming to Canada in 2005 and they would normally run merc small and big blocks up to 3000 hrs before rebuilding, or re-engine of commercial marine shuttles etc...use and maintenance is key

I had 2,400 hours on our 7.4's in a '95 330 when we sold it in 2011. Still ran strong, compression good, had no major issues with them. In salt water, just reg maintenance. It was a good set up.

2000 270 SD with 600 hours on my twin 4.3 V6's and still running strong. When I bought the boat I installed FWC and I'm hoping that helps with longevity. Manifolds and risers are the biggest maintenance cost.
