I guess this should just be a poll but if you can, tell what you like or dislike about either....and if you're considering making a change for next season.

I am not that big a fan of Grey Poupon. I have a covered slip and all of the clubs I have seen are not covered, true many have floating docks where I do not, but the dock is all concrete, and offers fairly good resistance to hurricanes up to a point.

We rent at a yacht club because of the location. We don't use the pool or tennis courts. If the weather nice to use the pool why not go Boating?
We do like the finger dock and having the concrete space behind the boat for the Boat for Table & chairs.

Well I would have to say both We keep the boat at a marina but as a slip holder there you are also an automatic member of the Yacht Club

We are in year 9 of a 10 year lease/purchase. Next April we will purcahse the slip, so I guess I am staying where I am.

I joined a Yacht Club this past season and I'm not sure I'm going to stay. I did it mainly for the kids and to get a slip.
It turns out that the kids didn't use it nearly as much as we thought they would, and the "waiting list" for a slip is not publicly posted so it could be years before you get one.
As it turns out I wound up buying a piece of property that has 50' of bulkhead and I'd rather ne there than in the Yacht Club's basin anyway.
Not sure if we are going to stay members. The only thing the Yacht Club has going for it as far as we're concerned is a private heading for members with slips available on a first come first serve basis. The place is nice with easy ocean beach access a short walk away, but we are debating whether or not that one feature is worth the thousands a year it winds upo costing for the membership.

Marina. The yacht club is not for me. We have met a few members of a local club and we just don't seem to have the same interests.

I keep my boat in a marina which has a gas dock, restaurant/bar, little shops and bands every Sunday.

I have joined a Yacht club nearby but they only have moorings so I won't put the boat there. However, I like the club very much. It has a nice bar (cheap) and I have met many new friends. I also get my gas for about 20 cents over the drop price which is about 50 cents cheaper than the marinas.

BTW - Around here you will not find covered slips.....

I guess what I'm trying to find out is if you experience the same relationship with the people at marinas as you would/do at a yacht club.
I'm in a yacht club and know just about every member, so going to my boat is almost always a social event (whether I expect it to be or not!). Just walking down the dock I'll run into at least of couple of other boaters and start up talking and have a drink...it sometimes takes me an hour to walk 100 feet!
Having said that, there is a slight chance I may leave for a marina which has many amenities our club does not have.
I'm wondering if those who are at marinas interact with their boat neighbors or just tend to keep to themselves.

Our marina has a pool, clubhouse, beach and regular functions with bands and seasonal parties throughout the year. It’s a fairly large marina and we know most folks on our surrounding docks and many on the other side of the marina. So I guess in that respect it is like a yacht club without the pomp and circumstance.

We're in a yacht club without all the pomp and circumstance. Pool, clubhouse, good neighbor and activities. I think "yacht club" sounded more upscale than "marina" to the developer, but essentially we're a marina.

We are in the same marina as Everything's Irie and have to agree with J. We are on a different dock but I know everyone on the dock and have a blast. We have missed staying on the boat only 5 weekends since January so that gives us a lot of time to meet and greet. We raft up with people from other docks and really do have a club like feel with out all the club issues. Good Luck with your decision

We belong to the Tacoma Yacht Club with a fulltime restaurant and bar, but we do not moor there. We joined originally for the outstations, they have power, water, cable tv and a park like setting at most (we have 5). There reciprocal privileges with another 50 clubs and access to their docks. For the $100/mo we more then save that on the weekends when we are tied to one of the many docks available to us. The added perk is we have met a ton of new friends with the same interests as we do... It is a blue/white collar club and the few snobs you just ignore.

same here. I think of it as a Marina..but they call it Yacht Club.

So I am not sure what it is for this poll.

We joined a yacht club a few years ago and after being in it one year did not renew our membership. I ordered a beer at a function and it was like I had commited murder or something. They had invited me to a function on the water and at the time I had the 44 footer with a fly bridge and most of the club had come on my anchored boat and rafted up. I was on top of the bridge and offered about 8 guys a beverage (because I was going to have one either way) and one guy responded that if I could sneek one up without his wife seeing it he would have one with me. Most of the guy's were in there late 40's to early 70's. Anyway, you can imagine why I did not stay in the club. They also met on Saturdays at a local restaraunt. I never made made it because I was was I was allways out on the boat on the weekends. I do dock the boat at the house so no need for a marina either but have been to a lot of cool marinas.

I love my marina.. (location and people there) but wish it was a club.. the owner doesnt do nothing but collect $$$$ and everyone does work there to keep it up..

We have a close group on our dock. We take trips together, socialize on crappy days or after we get back from our individual cruises. We all help each other when docking, etc. During the winter we organize a dinner around Februuary just to get together. Last year we had about 14 people. I really enjoy these new friendships.
