How far would you go?

It is about $2.65 or so here. I rarely buy gas as my plug-in hybrid gets 60mpg average and my SUV gets filled by the wife most of the time. She also takes them to be cleaned and washes the boat so we can just take off when I get to the marina : )

Wow!

I buy gas when and where it's convenient once I get down to a quarter tank or less. Price almost never factors into the equation.

I have a QT 2 miles from my house that is generally at the lower end of the scale for the Atlanta area which is where I normally fill up. My 80yo parents rave about Costco prices. It's about a dime cheaper but is also 10 miles away through some of the worst traffic in the city. You can keep that dime for the hour it would take me back and forth.

I have a car that "requires" premium and find that is the bigger difference to me. Some chains charge up to 50-60 cents more while others are 30. Sure the car runs fine on regular with all the sensors, but the mileage suffers around 6mpg using the low test.

I laughed when we took a spur of the moment ski trip this year and drove to Colorado. Along most of the "heartland" part of the trip there were three choices. Diesel, regular w/ethanol, and "Real Gas". I took the bait the first time and went along my merry way to the tune of 12mpg and a surcharge of about 60 cents a gallon. Filled up in Denver with premium and drove through the mountains at 20mpg. Got 12mpg on the way home with corn when I returned to the heartland plus 60 cents times 20 gallons.

I buy all my diesel from one place, no matter where I am in the city. It's always .15 cheaper than anywhere else. We also use tons of diesel in our bobcat and jackhammer compressor. Even the dyed diesel is more expensive. Same goes for gas in the boat, same station. But I make sure I usually try to fill up early in the morning when the fuel is the coldest underground and more dense.

I don't have that problem in this part of the world.... the price is all the same. Different story for the boat fuel; at the marina it is $ 2.4 per gallon and if I fill up at a state-sponsored station then I get it for $1.76; substantial saving!!!

Jimmy - I figured you just had a "gasoline" tap at your house! haha.

Interesting timing on this subject with the Colonial Pipeline issue - i haven't seen any issues yet here in NC, but they are sure talking about shortages, price increases, all the doom and gloom that comes with any fuel supply interruption.

what about motorcycles?

The attendant will hand me the nozzle if I'm on my bike and then I pump it. I hand the nozzle back to them when done and he puts it back on pump.

On the road I don't worry about the price as the savings is always less than $5.00. On the water it is a different story. I will take on enough diesel to get me to the next port where the price is generally $.50-60 cents less per gallon. That savings is usually around $150 or so.

What bothers me is that my local marina does not get this - quantity sells. They want to know why we don't fill up there and we tell them but nothing changes. The same distributor fills both marinas too. One time my local marine dropped the price to within $.05 of what the other port was selling fuel for and they sold out in less than a day because word got around the marina and all the locals topped off.

I literally pass 20 gas stations on my way to work
Gas Buddy is a good resource to le me know which one to stop at
there can be 35-40 cents difference in 45 mile drive

I use Gas Buddy all the time, and always patronize to lowest priced local station.

As I said in post #1, I use Gas Buddy all the time and the station that's within a mile of my house is almost always the cheapest. If that were not there I'd probably time my fill ups to when we make our Costco Run, which is about a weekly excursion.

I've found that when I'm traveling, the stations near the freeway exits are almost always the highest priced. If I can, I'll drive a mile or two off the freeway to save $.25-.30 per gallon.

I might drive further now - gas here in Charlotte is up .20-.30 since Friday. Place I usually stop was $2.09 Friday, it was $2.39 this morning.

One major brand-who shall remain nameless, but rhymes with X on, markets their gas to be higher in price to give consumers the illusion that it is a better quality fuel. BS!!! It all comes from the same refinery in Linden, NJ.

Here in Indiana we have the Speedway Effect. "In states that Speedway own a large share of the market, prices are quite active." Every week or so after gas prices have slowly gone down, Speedway will spike the price 20 to 35 cents higher.

I used to drive for a living. I drove a 70 mile circle around Indianapolis. I would notice that Speedway was always the first to raise their prices. Marathon almost always raises theirs next. Of course Marathon owns Speedway. This week we were down to $1.97. GasBuddy says a price hike is coming. Guess who was the first to raise their prices, Speedway and Marathon, $2.30. I have not shopped a Speedway in years.

We live in an area that has Kroger Supermarkets. If you don't know, Kroger offers 10 cents off per gallon of gas(up to 35 gallons) for every $100 spent per month. We do alot of shopping and usually get $1.00 off per month. Of course you have to buy at a Kroger or Turkey Hill gas station. We usually drive both cars to the gas station and park on both sides of the pump. I'll fill both cars and if we haven't gotten to 35 I'll fill my 5 gallon cans up. This saves $35 every month. Sometimes I'll put 35 gallons in the boat.

To answer the question, yes I'll drive out of my way for gas. How far, may be 5 miles. Especially like GasBuddy on trips.

So YOU'RE that guy!!! I've seen some near fights at the gas pumps while the poor guy waiting to use the pump has to wait for the guy who's blocking both sides of the pump with two cars to save a few cents. :smt014

I never look at the price at the pump. When the computer says I have ten miles remaining in the tank I pull into a station. I will sometimes pay a little extra for no alcohol gas figuring mileage is improved, but this something I don't obsess over. It all evens out. Sometimes I pay too much. Other times I get a deal.

I'll do what is convenient. My time is worth more than $.05 a gallon.

Same here... I never look and pay whatever the price is. I'm not retired either and don't have the luxury of time to be able to search for the cheapest price and then actually go out of my way to get it. Being married with two teenage boys and busy careers.... time is something I don't have a lot of.

Did you read my post? I saved $35 dollars. When was the last time you paid $36.02 for 35 gallons of gas?

Gas? What's that? (says the smart ass in his electric car).

I've been driving a Tesla Model S for about a year and a half, and I have to say it's very nice waking up every morning to a full "tank" of electrons.
