I am going to remove the prop shaft coupling on a 1978 SRV 300 twin engine straight inboards. Does anybody have any tricks to press the shaft out of the coupling so the shaft is not damaged? I need to replace the shaft log ( rubber hose that the packing nut mounts into ) it is cracked and needs replacement. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

They make a special tool.

Here is another version of a similar tool:

I'm not sure that I would be real comfortable using a tool that applies force against the strut to pull a shaft.

If you have access (and the boat is out of the water), there are a couple of techniques that work for straight inboards.

1) Slidehammer.... screws on to the shaft where the prop nut goes, remove the shaft lock bolts, spray penetrating fluid and wail away.

2) Old school.... use the hubs as a bolt press. Remove the shaft lock bolts, unbolt the hub from the transmission, use a combination of longer bolts and various sockets between the hub and the transmission to "press" the shaft out of the hub.

3) Time is money..... cut the shafts and replace them with matched hubs.

Since you are doing all this work, you may also which to consider installing dripless shaft seals. There are a number of posts regarding the process and costs.

Thanks for the info.. I have heard of using the hubs (couplers) to press out the shaft with rods and backing plates, along with a pulley installer - press.
Thanks again for the advice.
