I don’t like texting. There, I said it.

I don’t like getting them and it’s extremely unlikely you will get a text reply from me.

No, I don’t want you to text me an update about your life, have you text me Merry Christmas or Happy New Years.

I have spent some time Googling and reading about texting etiquette. These are made by the cell phone companies. Surprise, surprise, nowhere do they say to not text people that don’t want to be texted.

After one person sent me several texts that were not to me, general type texts that I think were sent to everyone in their phone book as if texting is a alternative to facebook or a tweet, two other things I don’t care for but I can choose to not participate in those, I called the person and said to them “I’m not into texting, please call me whenever you need to reach me but please do not text me."

To say then conversation did not go well is an understatement.

I’d simply bock them but it’s an all or nothing thing. If I block them they cannot call or text. My cell carrier, Verizon, does not offer text blocking, they offer number blocking. Since they are family I am afraid that would cause even worse issues. It may come to that but I’m seeking a softer and kinder suggestion.

Some people into texting seem to not get it that some people like me are not into texting.

So, does anyone have advice on how to deal with text-a-holics that send unwanted texts?

A friend of mine removed the capability to receive text messages from his phone to prevent this. He is with Verizon.

I do not see why someone would have reacted to you that way but nothing suprises me these days with some people.

Side Note-My wife is a text-a-holic. It drives me crazy.

I do not see a way to do that at my online account but I will call them. Thank you.

In a perfect world I could selectively block texts from specific numbers or only allow texts from specific numbers.

I am a text a holic and PROUD OF IT. While I am at it I will state I am addicted to my Blackberry too! Texting on a Blackberry lounging top side of my sea ray out in an off chute of the river nice and calm.. GOD HOW DOES LIFE GET ANY BETTER! HELL YA!

See, I have no issue with you texting to your heart’s content.

If it’s what you are into text away.

My issue is the texters that text people that do not want to be texted.

Can you see my side?

If you have verizon, you can block up to five numbers for texting......

Hi Scott and thank you.

Where / how?

I logged in and looked for this. I logged in, select Preferences, then choose Text Blocking from the menu on the left.

I can block numbers (Could be 5 total, I don’t remember) but it will block all texts AND calls from that number, not just texts.

I forgot, one possible downside to blocking all or select texts- The person sending you the text will not be notified the text did not go through which could cause some problems depending on how "emotional" the person sending the text is or what the context was.

That is actually how I found my friend had turned his off- he never replied and i called him.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GRAMMAR
Those of us who fall into the world of Hi-tech should take note of
the importance of correct grammar.

I have noticed that many who text messages, have forgotten
the "art" of capitalization.

Capitalization is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack
off a horse, and helping your uncle jack off a horse.

Verizon will remove any charges posted to your account as a result of unauthorized activity. They know who the spamers are. So, if spamers are sending you over any limits you may have, just tell them to take it off & they will. I have unlimited now but before I did, I had them make several "adjustments" including web charges when I had my daughters web blocked.

ps......I am in no way defending these jackazzez. Just sayin.

Funny!

Scott’s signature had something about killing grandpa but I don’t remember the line.

What kind of phone do you have? If you have a droid by any chance, you can download a text messaging app called 'Handcent'. You can blacklist numbers so they can't reach you anymore. This is totally separate from Verizon's blocking online.

The only people who text me are the people who have my phone number. I dont give my cell out on the internet or to anyone I dont want to have it. So when I get a text it is from some one who knows me and knows that texting is much easier for me because I hate talking on the phone unless I have to. ( seeing that is how I make a living when working I HAVE TOO).

What I would LOVE to stop is all the freaking SPAM FAXES!

I have Verizon and I have blocked all texting as well. You have to call Verizon to ask them to do this. Like Presentation I don't like texting. If someone wants to contact me they can call me. If I can't answer the phone they can leave a message.

I would be out of business if it weren’t for my crackberry. E-mails, voice mail, texting, talking, GPS, and viewing attachments are used most everyday. I do try to leave it in a utility compartment when on the boat unless I'm working from it.

I do not text those who wish to be called and I do call those who are family and close friends. I don't text well wishes as it seem cold like giving a gift card instead of taking the time to know what a person wants and buying it however there are times when gift cards are practical.

It drives me crazy to get abbreviated words however I know that many are charged by the number they use.

All in all it's the way it is and isn't going away anytime soon.

I did not like to "text" at first but just like any other advancement there is good and bad. Having two kids in College you never know when to call, even with there schedules. Plus now that I have a full keyboard on my phone its a lot easier.
We also use "Skype" which is great for the "Face to Face" contact with the kids.
