My 2005 Sundancer 280 with the stock Clarion Stereo plays just fine, but I cannot get the speakers outside of the cabin to work. Is there a separate switch or adjustment?

Make sure your stereo amplifier switch is on inside the boat and the speaker button on your helm touch pad is also on. It looks like a speaker ( sort of)

Does your radio have a fader control? My radio does and if not adjusted correctly the cockpit speakers are off.

I'll look for the amplifier switch inside the cabin, I've adjusted the fade control but no help. The cabin speakers work fine, nothing from the outside speakers. Thanks for the advice though.

No luck with the switch at the helm?

Do you have a separate amp for the cockpit speakers? On my boat the radio handles the cabin speakers and I have two amps (one for cockpit and one for swim platform). Those amps are hidden in my aft cabin area. Perhaps your amp is out or disconnected if you have one.

The outside speakers on my 320 shut off when I am running on batteries. They work fine when the engines are running or if the generator is on. I obviously have a weak battery that can't support the power needs of the amp. Not sure if that is your problem, but I thought I would share. I will be replacing all of my batteries in the spring.

I have an 05' 280. The amplifier switch must be on (it's clearly labled in the electrical panel). But even if it's not, I get a little sound outside. The Amp is located behind the mirrors in the mid-birth sleeping area. See if something is disconnected. There may even be a fuse there.

I think the separate amp idea is the right. I won't be able to check it out until this weekend, but I'll post the results.....Thanks.

It may sound far fetched, but after a 200 mile weekend cruise my outside speakers quit. At first it was only the starboard ones, then both sides. First the checking of all balance, fade and what not controls, switches, fuses and breakers, no help. Then the removal of the trim and grills in the cockpit, no help. After much cursing, and blaming everything but the skipper, of course, I removed the control panel in the salon, just under the stereo head, and found that the RCA plugs for the cockpit speakers had unplugged themselves. They were taped together, but now they are zip tied and taped. Be careful when removing the panel. The host of wires and contacts are live and sparks may fly, especially the main engine key switches at the bottom. Don't know if this helps, but it worked for me. Good luck.

Thanks! First post, first boat, new-to-me 2008 310 Sundancer, and the forums have already saved me a headache. Cockpit speakers work gone after I got the boat back from a simple warranty repair.

Y'know, I LOOKED through the dashboard for a speaker mute switch and missed it; was just about to tear down the wiring when I found this post.

You've already saved me hours. Thanks.

Now if I can just find a post on restoring metalwork; the previous owner didn't do such a hot job and I want to get after it before it gets worse.

Pull off the cover plates on your outside speakers and check their condition. Mine were not working also, but it was because they were toast. I got new ones and everything was fine.

This fixed mine on a 2004 280 Sundancer,

Your radio if it is a XMD3 model, has a setting that needs to be turned on to send power to the amp speakers for the cockpit. On page 14 of the manual it refers to setting the low pass filter. Factory setting is 120. That's where your problem is, cycle thru the options to "REAR" and your amp will now get the signal it needs.

Here's a link to the manual if you don't have it with the boat.
