I was out at the boat today getting ready for Fathersday and my AC display said it was low.

Can I recharge it like a car from stuff at a Auto parts store?

I see to coloered nuts (red and blue) hese have a ruber cover over them. I dont see a place to hook up a refregerant can. has anyone done this? HELP!

Hi, If it does really need charging, then there is a reason. If you don't have it leak checked first then you aren't addressing the problem. Is your filter clean, and nothing in front of the cold air return?

I don't think a display reading of LO PS means you need a charge. Might be related to water flow through the unit. Not sure but others may chime in.

Thanks! I will check it today when we go out for a fathers day cruise. I know it is not the air filter and I have plenty of pressure at the h2o discharge. Is there a temp sensor that will check the difference between air temp in the cabin and the temp settings on the thermostat control? The display said LO something and shut itself off. I had the door to the cabin cracked open and it was 97 degrees!

I think i will call my local Marine machanic on this one! In Texas, no AC means no boat!!

It is probably not standard auto freon (R12 or R134a). Mine is R22 (commonly used in earlier household systems and appliances).

These are very small closed systems, and any leak probably will require repair (or replacement) rather than just adding freon.

And in most refrigerant systems, you really can't just add freon. OK, you can, but you will typically overcharge them. You need to drain, vacuum, and recharge with the prescribed quantity of freon.

I had the same issue last year. Found some guy on ebay to get the R22 from. Drained and evacuated my system. Added the prescribed amount. It lasted about 2 days. I was working, and busy, so I had the dealer deal with it. About $600 for the replacement unit as I recall.
