It's 1987 5.7 4bbl 260hp alpha 1 gen 1. I cannot figure out the mercruiser parts web page and it keeps referrring me to the local dealer. I've already removed the unit to replace the impeller but once I got on ebay to order it, there's a million different numbers. Is there really that much difference in the kits? Any help would be appreciated. Had it done before by a shop but they're out of business now, and after watching all the videos on youtube, it looks like something I can do on my own

I don't know the number off hand but all the Gen 1 drives should use the same impeller. Some kits have the base plate with seal, those are the ones I usually use. Other kits are just the impeller and upper plastic housing. If its for an Alpha 1 Gen 1 it should fit your application.

I would also reccomend changing the whole water pump housing while youre in there. West marine has the kit with impeller for like 40 bucks. I just did mine last weekend. Easy peesy.

Back in the day when I had a boat with that accursed drive, there were only two kits available. You either bought the full kit of the half kit. They were basically the same, except the half-kit didn't include the lower pump housing that fit into the lower unit. Since that part didn't wear and rarely failed, they didn't need to be replaced as often as the rest of the kit. I don't think it matters otherwise as all the upper housings and impellers were the same for that vintage alpha.
