how an engine works

I know how an engine works but I find it fascinating that someone was actually able to mount a camera in an engine cylinder of an operating motor!

Cool.

Very cool. They had to have drilled and tapped the block to install that camera. Very interesting.

It is very interesting, but it looks as though the video is just the power stroke, repeated several times. Am I missing something? Where is the exhaust stroke?

Several years ago I attended a CAT dealer event where they showed video of the inside of the crankcase of a running diesel engine. It was very interesting, but the view of the spark and resulting explosion in the gas engine is awesome.

You can see the intake valve open, air rushing in. Then the combustion, then you can see the exhaust valve open, letting it all out. All 4 strokes are there...unless I too missed something.

Hey thats pretty cool view of the cylinder operation.

I always wondered how those diesels worked. Is that stuff on the bottom of the diesel block biodiesel?

Actually, I believe what we see is 3 strokes of 4: air/fuel intake; compression; and ignition. The video seems to stop and cycle back to intake just before the exhaust stroke, but it does show the exhaust poppet valve opening. My guess is that the camera (or light source) failed at that point. :smt089
