i had a port engine starter motor fail. i am in spain. buying one here would cost around 200 euros (270 US). so i internet ordered from the uk for 80 pounds (120 US).

its beyond my capabilites to change it out so i hired a local mechanic. his fees are 30 euros per hour (40 US). he did a good job, also made some engine tuning adjustments etc. billed me 4 hours for removal of old part and install of new. i was satisfied with that.

how does that compare to mechanics rates where you are?

am i allowed to say "JESUS!" on this forum....

now i know who owns all those really ******* big boats in the marina!

i honestly never expected these rates... i'm gonna retrain

Our dealer rate is $95. If you're happy with the guys work - stay on his good side! Beer, wine, women... whatever floats his boat!

$125/hour is equivalent to $260,000/year working 40 hours per week....

That's about 2.5x what an experienced computer software developer makes with 4-6 years of college and 10-15 years of experience....

What evens it up is the staggering investment in tools and facilities required by a mechanic to perform his tasks...if you haven't been in that world, you really would be shell shocked.

You can be sure the mechanic isn't getting that. The dealer gets the majority, the mechanic depending on how the dealer works the pay. Full time without regards to the work load, maybe 30 - 40 per. A lot of dealers pay more, but then they may not have a full 40 hour week year round.

What the dealer charges and what the mechanic gets paid are very different things, I'm certain. I would guess the dealer's mechanic gets $40/hr.

We bill our carriers 3x what we pay our employees. The employees are welcome to get 3x their wages, but to do that, they will have to take out a 2nd mortgage, borrow until they are in debt to their eyeballs, make promise that they can't keep, forgo all luxuries for 5 years, and work 80 hours per week for the next 10 years. During that time pay off all their debt and create a sustainable business to continue getting 3x what they get paid not. The alternative is to work for someone who did that. That's what the dealer's mechanics do.

See... you are one of those rich bastards that Obama is going to take care of...

I dont understand the complains on dealers and their margin.
If you think it is attractive be be a dealer and these are bastards who just gain richness out of your money.... change your profession and become a dealer and you will be on the other side of the world

I am not a dealer but I working for After Sales Automotive at the manufacturer side and know about the profitability and bankruptcy of our dealers. You wont be one of them , believe me. Not at this difficult times. (Crisis)

The other thing I don't understand is why it took him 4 hours to replace the starter? I haven't seen your engine or bilge, but usually this is a matter of a few bolts and some wires? I would think an hour standing on your head would suffice, but maybe other "things" had to be removed just to get to it?
