Can anyone tell me the easiest way to verify the hp output on my 2000 mercruiser 454 mpi engine? I just had a starboard engine rebuilt and the rebuilt one is producing less rpm's than the old one. Will the computer they hook up to the ECM on the engine tell you that info? Any information would be appreciated.

We'll need your engine serial number to confirm your actual horse power for you, Other then that, it would be just a guess from anywhere between 300 up to 385 HP.:smt001

I have same engines with 1700 hours on them and they seem to work well. I burn about 1/2 quart of oil every 100 hours. Why did you need to rebuild your engine? How many hours were on it? What were the signs you need to rebuild it?

If I understand the question correctly, you are not looking for the stated horsepower of the engine, but rather you are trying to measure the actual output of a rebuilt engine? On the hard, that's what dynos are for, but in the water there isn't an easy way (that I know of). Hypothetically, if I wanted to try and figure it out, I would probably take my boat out on a very calm day, and map my performance curve at time and speed with the known good engine (marking speed by GPS at precise timing points). I would then do the same thing with the other engine and try to approximate a percentage difference, if there was one.

Thank you all for your input , but I thought a tech could read the hp output as well as rpm's from the computer hookup that is part of the engine electronics package on these engines. Or did someone feed me a line of**** witch would not surprise me a bit. Thanks again Gus

I don't think a tech can read engine HP simply by hooking up to the engine computer. Actual HP can only be measured by hooking the engine up to a dyno and testing it. Even "identical" engines can (will) produce different HP.

Thank you everyone for all your input. I must of been misinformed . Beachnut
