I have a 2001 260 Sundancer with the original 7000btu Cruisair air-conditioner. Does anyone have any experiance with using a Honda EU2000i to run this size of a/c. Please no responses about the dangers of using a portable gen. I am well read and fully aware of the complications and dangers associated with portable gens. I need to know if the Honda can handle the very brief start-up amperage of this a/c unit. According to the Cruisair technical staff this a/c unit draws 24 amps at start-up, however, they tell me this start-up amperage is for less than 1.5 seconds, thats right, one point five seconds. The running amps is 6.5 amps.

Spam.....just to get us going. I'm out.

Holy crap! Hard to believe after this many efforts to discuss bad choices with portable gens this thread starts. Yes, that gen will handle the load, no you should not have that gen on your vessel.

Do not take the bait man.

Yepeeeeee Beer and popcorn please and BTW welcome.

Might want to do a thread search.....

Although in all fairness I do see quite a few boaters with portables on the Columbia River and they place them on the dock with a hugh chain around them......

It will work if you purchase a garden hose and a metal funnel.

Place the funnel over the generator exhaust, attach the garden hose and then run the garden hose into to sleeping compartment.

Then start the generator...

I thought you would put the garden hose in the water for a wet exhaust?

Dumb question...I have no experience with on board generators but how do those exhaust? What makes them less dangerous than a portable? They must be designed to exhaust differently otherwise they wouldn't put them in boats so am looking to understand how they work.

Ron,

There is a whole library of commentary on the risks of using portable generators already here. For detailed reading do a search, some of it is amusing, some silly and much of it is useful. Built in generators exhaust out the side of the boat at the stern where air flowing over the hull will carry the CO away from the boat. The exhaust from a portable placed on the swim platform flow back into the cockpit and cabin due to the station wagon effect. Ditto for placement on the bow.

There are also electrical issues because a portable is independent of the boat's grounding system.

There should be a T-Shirt made for this question...
/raises hand YES i would have a T shirt ...

I got mine from Jim @ BOE as part of last year's group buy. I'll give you a serious answer. Yes, it will run your AC all night long, no problem. Set it on the dock as far downwind from the boat as your shore power cord will allow. I try to put mine 20-25' minimum from the boat when I use it, more if I can. Check the weather forecast if possible to make sure that the wind won't be reversing direction on you overnight.

Never put it on the boat to run the AC or the CO may get into the cockpit and cabin. I will ocassionally set mine on the swim platform if I need to use the microwave for a minute or two, but never for more than that.

Oh Boy.. here we go... Had the EU2000i for my 260DA and we ran it and ran it and ran it.. on the swim platform and the bow.. never went to sleep with it running.. ( I am really not that stupid) but i have done some stupid stuff.. we have taken it up on the beach and left it run.. it will run your air about 6 hours befoe running out of fuel...
