I have attached several pictures of my cockpit table a friend made for me. He used a “Carve Wright” computerized wood carving CNC machine to cut the name. The template came from the graphic used for the boat name. The table wood is Red Mahogany.

I think you and your friend need to go in business!

Very nice.

Just an FYI. Over the winter I sanded down my teak cockpit table and then put about 7 coats of shellac on it. I think it was Zinnser Bulls eye. I had a can left over in my basement that was about 3/4 full and didn't think I needed to buy anything new. I used the stuff in my house for several projects and it held up very well.

Well I screwed up. The finish bubbled up on my cockpit table the first weekend I had it on the boat. The sun was shining on the table, it heated up the finish and it blistered. I will have to re-sand the table next winter and use a sealer that is made for outside. Now I have double the work. Hopefully, your friend used the right stuff on your table. If he didn't you might want to keep that beauty out of direct sunlight.

Vince,

Shellac will be fine with an overcoat of exterior poly. It is old school wooden boat construction. You might be able to fix the problem by using wood grain alcohol. The alcohol will dissolve the shellac and you can wipe it off. It's messy, so its not a job for the on the boat. After you wipe off the excess and let it harden you should then be able to apply an exterior poly.

Thanks for the advice Henry!

That table looks really great. Will the inset be filled in so it will be flush?

My table is just about done. My Friend is a painter and is applying the "catalyzed" clear on it. It should be very durable.
Here's the latest image. I should get it back from him next week.

We thought about filling it in, but I’m not sure I would like the look. I think we will just leave it as it is. Yours looks great as well.

That two part catalyzed "pour" fills in nicely and will protect that routing. That's a great looking table.

These tables are awesome! I'm surprised, though, that you didn't feel the need to install cup holders in them, as the solid wood only lends itself to dockside useage, does it not?

I'm replacing my cockpit table with the one I made. The stock one is so small, when our family sits there it feels like roasting marshmellows around your Cub Scout Den Mother's Cigarette.

Very nice! What was used to stain and protect the maple?

We experimented with this last season and the types of stain to use. The one I had last season faded so this year we went with a different type of wood and stain. My mistake though, it is not mable but Red Mahogany. Winwax Helmsman Spar Urethane clear gloss was the stain, which is good for wood exposed to sunlight, water and temperature changes.

The table is made to the same dimensions of the original one, so I use the cover that came with the Sea Ray table when the boat is not in use.

Beautiful tables! Todd, are you using the original support for the new table?

Nice tables guys.... I just added a new one too...
