Home security systems

There are quite a few apps that work with Foscam cameras, I can view 6 at once on my cell. I have an indoor camera, mounted on my front porch...works just fine even in -20 degrees but it is pretty well protected from rain.

As I understand it, each Foscam Camera acts as it's own DVR by having limited on-board storage then they all just act as stand alone units? Do they register seperately to foscam by DDNS for the app to work? Is there any way to have them point to a foscam network DVR?

No on board storage. Mine are all wireless, and recorded on a dedicated PC. A few different software you can purchase. Mainly bought it so we can see the house while we are away, and can be sure our sons ok after school. I love the ability to turn them remotely, and can listen in. Very good infra red also.

Hey Guys,

I'm doing some research and this Samsung unit looks really promising. This one is the higher end with 10 cameras so its bigger bucks. They have lower ones with 4 and 8.
It looks like it has all the options we have been talking about and looking for including notifying if theres any motion on certain cameras you designate. Seen some bad reviews but thats not throwing me off yet.

This is the same one I was looking at but with four cameras - SAMs club as well
If you end up with this please report back :)

The camera you linked is 650 TVL, you actually won't be losing too much with the Samsung. I just don't know without seeing the night vision how that stands up. They vary so much as there has been a lot of improvement in this area over the past few years.

Some cameras, like the Foscam linked, have SD memory card slots in them. So basically the camera itself acts like a DVR. It will store the video on the SD card and has a built-in "web server" so you could type in the IP address into a web browser to interact with the camera (or smart phone / tablet). Most likely there will be an app you could download to your phone as well. Once setup you'd probably never know the difference.

The big advantage of a DVR or NVR (network video recorder) is that the interface for multiple cameras is in one spot along with the storage. That's not to say that the Foscam app (since we are using them as the example) would not give you ability to view more than one camera. Can any Foscam users answer that? Plus the data is remote from the camera so if the cam is destroyed the data is not. For small systems like what you are talking about I think there is a lot of merit to the storage on the camera. Did that help or did I just muddy the waters more?

Here is Foscam's outdoor line. http://foscam.us/outdoor-cameras.html I looked and it doesn't look like they have one that quite fits your needs. This is the closest one I could find. ~60' of IR nightvision. Built in NVR, smart phone compatible, but the resolution kinda sucks. It would be grainer than what you have now by a decent margin. http://foscam.us/outdoor-cameras/foscam-fi8905w-outdoor-wireless-ip-camera.html The medapixle cameras they have don't have the night vision distance you need.

I also made the assumption you are putting this outside. I can look at the indoor line if you are shooting through a window or something.
So if I use this camera http://foscam.us/outdoor-cameras/foscam-fi9805w-wireless-ip-camera.html where is the data stored? Do I need to buy a computer just for this alarm system or can I connect it to a dvr?
Also - anyone try the "Q-See" brand?

at the end of the day (or after an incident) camera usually are not that much help.

I will, I'm getting closer to it for sure.

So I bought a Swann camera SWPRO-642 which has 700 TVL. The decision came from seeing it at best buy and looking at some reviews, and... having a best buy store credit :). I can say that using my existing dvr it seems quite close in picture to the expensive camera my friend loaned me. I have some "snow" dancing in front of the screen at night only and customer service needs me to adjust the on screen setting (white balance) but this requires me to dismount it so this will wait until this weekend.
I figured if I did not like this unit it was cheap enough I was not out much - but so far not bad.

Uh sorry. I didn't see the question until today but I guess it's a moot point to answer now. Glad you found something that you are happy with.
