Home Port Name?

Decide carefully. USCG gets about $100 for changing it later and you'll need a letter from your lender if applicable. Kind of a pain. Speaking from experience (twice).

I always laughed when the small trawler next to me in the Charleston City Marina was documented with Ketchum Idaho as the home port.

Also Ohio registration does not require a title for documented boats hence no sales tax and there is no property tax on boats. Registration fee is about $100 for a 3 year decal.

So if I buy a Mich boat and have it documented at the time of purchase then bring it back to Ohio I don't have to pay sales tax?

That would depend on MI sales rules. The documentation is the title and Ohio collects the sales tax when you title the boat, not on the bill of sale. South Carolina exempts sales tax on used boats. The laws are different from state to state.

Nope, you have to pay $300 which is the same for any boat you buy in SC, new or used. I think it is 5% of price or $300 whatever is less. In fact I just got a letter from the SC Dept of Revenue last week because the dealer never paid it to them a year and a half ago when I bought the boat, probably because I handled the USCG documentation. I was just suprised they tracked it down. I sent them a copy of the bill of sale where I paid the $300 to the dealer.
