Good morning. I went to my boat yesterday and it was covered in bird droppings. They were nice enough to leave bones and parts of crabs as well. Two quick questions:

How do I keep them away? Some people have pin wheels, owls, noise makers, flags - does anyone have anything that works. They were camping out/ hanging out on top of my canvas, not just the poles...

Cleaning off bird droppings??? My boat like most of yours was waxed like two weeks ago. I want to remove the bird droppings but not remove the wax. I tried the full pressure of a hose and then some mild detergent. It got about 75 percent off. How do I get it off the canvas? How do I get it off the deck?

Thanks,

If your deck is fiberglass, toilet bowl cleaner will remove it I use all the time for tree sap and other stains. That said it will remove the wax too so there is a trade off but it does work and it's cheap.

When we put in at the club we are at for the first time, we got hammered! Seriously a horror show.
Bought a Gull-sweep. We now affectionately refer to it as the boat beanie
I think it helps. We still get littered on but nothing near that first time.
It spins, makes noise and the things on the end look like they have eyes.
Your mileage may vary....

The best thing I have found, actually used today, is mequires flagship cleaner wax. It works great and leaves wax behind. Sounds counterintuitive but one step and it's protected as well.

Our marina puts up thick fishing line from poles running the length of the dock the really help.

After 15 years, the only thing I've found that works reliably is a Gull Sweep.

Oh, and Star Bright Bird and Spider Stain remover works very well also.

Steve......I have some boatwash that says it will not strip wax. If you want to give it a try send me a text and I'll tell you where it is. Otherwise, I have some heavy duty hull and deck cleaner which will take off the wax, but works great.

The birds do love your boat. I saw the marina guys trying to chase them off of your boat the other day. I think it is because you didn't have any other boats next to you.

whatever you decide, don't use what this guy uses. Good incentive to get away from the dock more often.

I use the fishing line method. Once they hit that, they do not come back. Raise your antennas and run from side to side and front to back. Has worked for me for years. Only needed to keep it up for about two weeks. As for the stains on the fiberglass, I use the Meguires as mentioned earlier. Good luck !

Beyond the seagulls, we also have these little purple martins that love to hang out on the bow rails.
A friend of mine a few docks over found these clips that you attach to the bow rails and thread fishing line through. - Stopped them cold.

You guys are simply running single lines of fishing line from an antenna to a bow rail, both sides, and then side to side and that stop's em??? This seems almost too simple!

Thats all our marina does. They run the length of the main dock about 8' above the dock. The swallows dive around but the seagulls stay away

I have those little barn swallows in my marina, same problem as your purple martins (are they the same bird?)- they camp on the bow rails and $h!t like crazy on my gunwales.

I run the lines of plastic flags you see at car dealerships and wrap them on the rails. Works better than anything in my situation, and I tried the clips.

As far as the staining. The non-skid is more troublesome as I keep a ton of wax on the shiny parts and they tend to not stain much. But I don't get too worked up as the sun will bleach out the stain in short order once you clean the offending pile off.

'Spray Nine' works great for removing spider poop so I wonder if it would do the same for bird poop....

They are the swallows! - I dont have the slightest idea why I said they were purple martins.

And we use Starbright Bird and Spider skid mark remover. Works well.
