Friend's boat (2008 Rinker 360) does not have a vent line filter from the holding tank (surprised me since I thought the filter was standard on vacuflush). I have now learned the secrets of making the filters and have an extra I can give him. His family does complain often of smell when flushing but they use the chemicals as per manuf directions. Question is should I go through the trouble of installing one for him? I've always had one and it seems to work great as I can tell when it is time to replace it.

Have one on my boat and it works, so my answer would be if it stinks, put a filter on.

Sounds like you answered your own question, I've always had them, never had a problem with stinking.

But I don't think I'll remove it to see if it is really working. :wow:

I just had to replace mine - world of difference. The guys I tie up to sure am glad I changed it. Although $80 is high - would love to hear about how to rebuild one.

Hang on; donning Nomex.

A properly designed and properly used waste system (#'s 1 and 2 are essential) needs NO filter.

Peggy Hall explains it very well.

Here is a synopsis:

She is still regarded as the most knowledgeable in the marine sanitation industry by companies like Raritan and Sealand

IMHO, the sanitation vent system in Saint Max is a HUGE shortcoming of the boat. The tank is vented properly from the top, however if the line was much larger, it could also be used as a flushing line.

My 2 cents.

POPPYCOCK! I don't care how well one "maintains" his or her holding tank. Human waste stinks like S#&T, especially when it bakes in a near air-tight tank for a week in the 90 degree August heat. These filters are an absolute necessity. They will work for a very long time unless they get wet. Replace your filter when your flushes get skunky and your replacement should last you 4-5 six-month seasons. And give Jack's product a try. $90 for a PVC tube with charcoal stuffed inside is highway robbery! I made one a few years back after I picked one up at West Marine and it's been sitting in my basement since. Just waiting for the store-bought one to fail.

Therein lies the problem. A well vented tank will never be air-tight. A filter only serves to mask a problem. Liken it to using Binaca to cure Trench Mouth.

Whoever says you don't need a vent line on a holding tank must not have a Vacuuflush system......or is full of crap.

To flush the head the system created a large vacuum. When the ball is released, the stored vacuum...i.e. air......and the waste rush to the holding tank. A vent is needed to release the air in the holding tank above the liquid and waste that is displaced by the volume entering from the recent flush. Without the vent, you would explode the tank every time you flushed the head.

Now go back to Ron's post............the air displaced by the vent is going to smell bad, for obvious reasons.

I don't think DP is disputing that a vent line is necessary. He's just saying if you take care of your tank it will smell like rose petals without a filter. I guess DP's s*#t doesnt stink!

just messin' with ya DP!

Sorry jack, I would buy one but your feedback score is not encouraging.... LOL Todd

You're right. I have not had a lot of boaters "discover" me yet. So it would be great if you order one and install it. If you like it - tell every one on CSR how great it is. You can also give me a good rating.

If not, DON't send it back but I'll send you a full refund.

YES! Until they get wet!
Must be a Rinker thing as we were in a marina over the weekend with a guy on an '07 that had a nice sweet smell every time he flushed.
