Brand new member, and here's my situation. A friend of mine wants to give me a boat for some work I did for him. Actually, he just wants someone to haul it off because it's been sitting for like 5 years. I realize that means there is going to be tons wrong, but can you guys point me in the direction of what this is. He thought it was a 1980 Sea Ray, but I'm thinking it's a 1979 Weekender, and I'm trying to figure out what the length of the boat is without headed out there in the rain and wind to measure it. I am positive it's longer than 24'....or am I all off base. Any thoughts on what this boat is?

See if you can get the hull ID #. It and Sea Ray can get you a good bit of info on it then.

I'm sure some on here will be able to give you an idea.

and welcome to CSR! :smt001

Thanks, and yep, there's a lot I didn't think of when I saw it about 6 months ago. I had him send me that picture from his phone. I never even walked it off because at the time I wasn't thinking I'd be the owner, I was just chuckling at how the boat ended up in that situation. He was leaving his parking lot and ran the trailer over a guardrail and ripped the axles off the frame and they got it back to that location and it's set there for about 2 1/2 years...So, I realize it's gonna be in pretty bad shape, but I'm not sure how bad :-(.

damn, yep, that's probably it...so it is probably a 24'er...but the guy says it's a 1980. At least I can start looking at some pictures of Sun Dancers...

Welcome and as suggested get the HIN# and call Sea ray.

Its only rain, you won't melt...promise

I was wondering how long it would take for that response after I reread my post

Yep, I'm going over to check it out on Thursday. Thanks again for all the info in this thread. I'll let you guys know what I can find out>

Okay, went ahead and drove over today at lunch to take a look at her. I mean if the guy is going to give me a boat, the least I could do is go by and take a look. I did get the HIN# but it appears that Sea Ray is closed for the Holidays until Monday. So, there isn't much I can do with the HIN but it's: SERA38670575

Here's what I think I have gleaned from it just by doing a walk around.

1975 Sea Ray Sundancer 240
Twin Mercruiser 250/L6 165HP engines
custom aluminium swim deck
tandem trailer with the wheels busted off on the right side

So, my father-in-law and I are going by on Friday to take a look at the trailer because he's a welder and we want to see what it looks and if it can be fixed. He basically turned too short pulling on to the highway and the trailer went over a guardrail and it literally ripped wheels off the right side of the trailer :-(. So, it's been sitting for almost 3 years behind his shop uncovered.

I'm beginning to think it's not worth the hassle but it sounds like it could be fun. I've never done any work on a boat, but I've restored several cars in my life, and I'm thinking if it's free and I can get it to my place, for close to zero money, it might be fun just to see what she's all about.

Fun - Some.
Costly - Yup.
Worth the effort - Indeed!

It will be a learning experience. I'll guarantee you that!

If you do take on the project you will find that this site will be your best friend.

Good luck. Welcome to CSR!

Yep... from the HID - "SERA" Built in the Sea Ray Phoenix Arizona plant, last to digits "75" = 1975 year model.

Why do I get the feeling that if I bring her home, I'm gonna pour about $10K into a boat that's max value could prolly around $3K. That's about how it's going to be right? :)

Time to start explaining to the wife that it's not about the cost but the fun when we're done :)

Buy $10k boat that runs and you'll save another $10k on marriage counseling.
