I’m sitting at anchor on the Tennessee River. When I started my port engine the ignition on/off switch started smoking. I removed the 10 amp breaker and it was very hot. I don’t have a spare on board so I swapped the blower breaker. It started smoking immediately upon starting the engine. Any recommendations

Run on the starboard engine to a marina with a competent electrician who knows boats, and how to troubleshoot a dangerous situation. You are flirting with the possibility of a major fire.

I completely agreee. Might even want to kill the battery for that motor, as long is it doesn’t control other equipment.

let us know more when you can

Ya. What them 2 said. Amazes me how many folks if it happens at house are calling an electrician. But on boat will break out the tester. Don’t mess with electricity.

Read your post again, sorry, sounds like you in dire straits. I ain’t an electrician but you got tow insurance? I be inclined to tow back, sounds like a possible fire chance.

We are in a safe anchorage only about 15 miles from our home marina. I do have tow coverage but this close to home I can just call some of my dock neighbors to come get us. Electricity scares me and I have no confidence in our marina’s mechanical services. Thanks for y’all’s advice.
