The dinghy that came with the 390MY I recently purchased has an older (maybe circa 1998-2004) Johnson 6hp outboard. It runs OK, but probably needs a little TLC, like spark plugs, filters, etc.

I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to remove the cover/cowling. Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Without seeing, hard to say exactly. But there's always some type of latch - sometimes on both ends. Sometimes the latch/lever is hidden a bit under the lip of the cowling. Sometimes it's a "badge" on the vertical face of the cowling (front or back) that twists.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll keep looking and playing around with it. If I can't figure it out, I'll post some pictures.

I was surprised to see that old Johnson manuals are not available online for free. They actually charge $30-40 for them. In this day and age of easily downloaded PDFs, I can't think of any other company that does this.

I was able to download the user manual for my 11 year old 390MY from the Sea Ray web site, and have probably downloaded a hundred or more manuals and instruction sheets for all sorts of products over the years.

I think Evinrude has made a horrible decision on this.

Press in on the tab on the back of the cover base and the cover comes right off. The front of the cover has a "hook" so pivot the cover over the engine and remove.

Thank you! I'll try that tomorrow.

I need to correct this a bit - rather than press the tab just pull up on the little black tab with your finger; the cover should easily come off with that. I just went out and verified with my little Johnson Seahorse 6.
