A friend sold me a brand new still in the box Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop for $100 bucks.:smt038

I hate Win7 and tried to downgrade to WinXP and it won't let me !!.

I'm a WinXP guy and don't know jack-poop about Win7.. Can/Will anyone help me with this ???.

My hacking skills are lacking with this Win7 laptop. :smt021

PS, It won't let me wipe the hard-drive clean either. :smt089

Wayne, you can try this link:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7

Thanks Jerry, But I want Win7 off this laptop. There must be a way ??.

This thing has a mind of its own !! it says you can't do this or that when I try getting rid of Win7. :smt013

The best way to do it if you never want to have win 7 again on this laptop is to format the whole hardrive look to see if there is a recovery partition if there is do a complete format, if you want to restore it back to win 7 (maybe for re-sale) do not format the recovery drive just drive C. All you need to do is install XP and get the drivers from Dells website or there might be all the drivers on the recovery drive you can use.

Edit: You can't install XP with win 7 on it unless it was an upgrade from XP to 7 then there might be a restore point but it's doubtful.

exorcise Win7 with a hammer.
works every time Wayne

Bob, Heres the problem, When I try to reformat it, it tells me I can't do that. :smt021

When I put in the XP disk it says you can't do that either.

Windows XP won't run on that laptop. XP won't have the necessary drivers.....not possible, sorry.

OK Thanks TB, Now I know why it wouldn't let me do it..

I'll take it to the computer shop and trade it in on a WinXp laptop.

XP won't last forever Wayne. Windows 7 isn't that much different.....just learn it...you will be fine. Or, switch to a Mac and really blow your mind.

You can still load xp the drivers have nothing to do with the install, dell just has the 64bit drivers for vista and win 7 for the n5010.
How much you want for the dell?

Ok now I'm really confused, :smt089

One says it can be done and another says it can't. So how come it won't let me ??

Give me a few days and I'll let you know. You know what I paid for it.

7 is an excellent stable OS. You really should try to use it for a while and get used to it. I had my whole office running on XP and then it became impossible to get a NEW xp machine. Begrudgingly I moved to 7 pro. It's weird at first but you get a feel for it and then later, when, you go back to XP, it looks and feels antiquated.

We're both saying the same thing there are no drivers for XP only Vista and Win7.

To format the drive you need to start the computer with a start up disc (cd) and boot to the command prompt (cmd) once at the command prompt type: Format C:

Try Win 7 for a couple days it's easier than you think.

OK, I misread your post Bob,

I'll give it a try for 1 week, If I don't get use to it , Its coming your way or I will trade it in.

Thanks again Guys for your help. :smt001

In order for XP to run on that machine you need the XP drivers for minor things like your hard drive, sound and display to work. XP won't run on that machine without the drivers. There is no XP SATA driver for that particular machine....your hardrive won't be recognized without the SATA driver.

Ok, Here's another problem....:smt089

I tried downloading Firefox and it just told me that Firefox isn't compatible with Win7..WTF is that all about ??.

I'm thinking this thing needs a new home before I smash it. :smt021.

PS, I just tried loading Norton's Antivirus Corp Edition to it and its not compatible either !!

WTF am I doing wrong ???

Wayne,

I feel your pain. I bought a new Dell a few years back and it was my first and will be my last! If you want to gain an appreciation for Window 7, try using Window Vista for a while... Now that will give you HEADACHES!! Don't give up just yet. Windows 7 is not all that bad after you get the hang of it. At least you got a great deal on the laptop!! I am embarrised to say how much I paid for mine.

Jim, Here my setup above the garage. Dell & Toshiba lappy's are running XP with no problems downloading anything I want. :smt001

I'm guessing that Win7 and I don't like for each-other or I'm just retarded. :smt101
