HELP! What's going on in my engine compartment?

Started with a small chip missing at the beginning of the season and now it has grown. You can pull it off with your finger. It's not smooth like gel coat but it covers the entire engine compartment over the rough fiberglass. Very thin. How worried should I be. My engine compartment always has "some" water in it since day 1. Would this be covered under warranty? My boat was splashed in 07 so it's less than 5 years old. Any advice would be great. Thanks, Brian

Hi Brian, I had exactly the same thing except the color of my bilge coating is grey. I called Sea Ray and they told me it happens (could have been dirt or some impurity that wasn't cleaned off before they coated the bilge and then over time it cracked off because it wasn't adhered well. Same area too, right in front of the two bilge pumps between the stringers. I sanded, cleaned with acetone and recoated with some finishing gel coat. I was worried a little about any water getting into the layers because the prior owner also had water in there from a cracked and leaking garboard plug housing. Sea Ray told me that the hull is solid and while there area couple of small pieces of wood in that area glassed into the hull to connect things like the bilge pump and switches to, that the hull is solid so it's cosmetic (that's what they told me). If you call them yourself, I'd like to hear what they tell you... In any case, mine is now sealed up, garboard plug fixed... bilge dry now. I also think the original grey coating in my bilge was called 'bilgekote', which is what sea ray told me.

Brian, have you checked the tightness of the 4 hose clamps on the rubber exhaust hose? While greasing the drive splines last weekend, I saw a small water trail on the back of one my exhausts (port side of starboard engine). All of my clamps were not as tight as they should be...could be a source for some of your water....

Update. Well, while checking the engine compartment a few weeks ago I noticed something didn't look the same. It's all repaired!! Thank you Sea Ray or Marine Max or .....
