I searched the forum before posting this and could not find anything similar. I have a 1995 330 DA with 454 Hurth V-Drives. Took the boat out tonight, cruised around a bit, opened her up for a bit, then back down to cocktail cruising speed and noticed a little funky noise coming from the port side. It almost sounded as if the engine wasn't running well and the normal "clap" from that engine was louder. I started to head back and as I was pulling into the harbor I put the port side in reverse to start the docking process and nothing happened. I put it forward and back and nothing, and then the port engine died. I tried starting it again and it started but wouldn't shift. I said f*@k it I need to get this thing docked. Luckily I had a buddy with me (along with my wife and 2 year old) and after a few close calls go it back in the slip on one engine. Got her tied up and started it up again. started fine and was shifting fine! i gave it some gas and the weird rapping noise came back. I shut it down to not cause any more damage (if i had). I will be calling the marina in the morning to look at it. Any ideas what is going on? I hope its something simple and not needing a new transmission. Why would the engine die if the transmission was not shifting and sounding weird? I thought maybe i need a new impeller (its about a year old) but the temp was never above 170. Any advice is great.

Thanks!

Chris

You mean like something broke off and is stuck in a gear or something?

No like something maybe wound around the prop and maybe dislodged itself. If something large enough it could stall the engine. But the part about just running rough might mean something else. Check your cap/rotor, plugs and wires. I've heard if one cylinder isn't firing it makes the tranny rattle.

Start by checking the fluid in the transmission and doing a visual inspection of the unit, look for any leaks, or signs of external issues. Also agree that you could have picked up a piece of line or other debris and wound it up in the prop/shaft.
