1996 sundancer 270 7.4L
Engines
7.4 L mercruiser
I bought a 1996 sundancer 270 with 7.4L , we've taken it out a few times and its been perfect, UNTIL the last time we took it out. We were on the lake and had started the boat and moved spots multiple times and then when we were ready to head home it just clicked. As of now, we have replaced the starter ( twice just to make sure ), the slave solenoid, and both batteries. We have cleaned all the terminals and it still clicks but it now has a continuous alarm when i turn the key, it's still clicking but with an alarm now. We don't know what else to try please help!!

Are you sure the alternator is good? If it is it is most likely a bad connection somewhere, engine ground cable?

Did the motor overheat at all before this all started? Could it have hydrolocked ?

Shift interrupter, or a bad ignition switch

We look at the gauges and never felt that we were close to overheating, is there a way to find out for sure? And how could we check the ignition switch and shift interrupter?

I can't remember if we checked it or not but we checked all the connections that we know of.

Can you bypass ignition on this and jump the solenoid.

We worked on the starter and got it to crank but it still won’t turn over, how do i know if it’s hydro locked?

"Crank" or "Turn over"? I read that as the same thing. Please clarify if the engine will spin with the starter but not start, or the starter cannot turn the engine. If the starter can't turn the engine but makes an obvious "clunk" as the Bendix engages the flywheel, then you've probably got a stuck engine. Do a load test on the battery before going too much further, as it may be a bad alternator as mentioned earlier, meaning you've been running on the battery's reserve capacity.

Remove spark plugs and see if water in cylinders. Mark the plug wires with tape as to not mix them up for re-install.

Ty Quint. I just got back to this

As Q said, mark the plug wires and pull the plugs. Then turn the motor over. If water comes out of any plug hole, she has locked up.

If you know how to do this kind of work. Risers and manifolds, oil changes, pressure tests, all of these will be in your future.

You said she turned over but would not start? Did that continue or did it stop turning? Can you give us any other info?

we found water in the cylinders so that's an issue we're working with now

Does it have wet or dry joint risers
