I have been fighting oil filter issues and I am trying to get this all figured out.

I have a remote oil filter and I have had problems getting the filter off and on. It just doesn't thread on very smoothly and has gotten worse. It has gotten to the point that yesterday when changing my oil I could not get the filter off at all. I broke a filter wrench trying to do so.

I decided that I need to replace the flange that the filter mounts on. After disassembling it I realized that the fitting itself (where the filter threads on to) is actually replaceable. I finally got the filter off by removing the fitting from the flange, which also unthreads the filter.

The fitting had bad threads on it and I am not sure if it was crossed threaded at one time or an incorrect filter but was forced on?? I couldn't even thread the fitting off the flange until I cleaned the threads up. It looked really bad and now after some thread filing it has flat spots on it.

So now after I cleaned the threads up, the fitting threads off and on the flange real nice but I still can't get the filter to start going on (and I don't want to force it).

So, I want to replace the fitting (because it still looks pretty bad) and I want to verify that I am using the correct filters.

(Another minor issue...
I have a 5.0L engine that I thought was a MPI engine. But the shroud on the intake says it is an EFI Electronic Ignition??)

Anyway, When I look up the remote oil filter fitting for a MPI or EFI it doesn't look like what I have. the link below is the closet thing I found but it is for a carb engine??? The fitting I think I need is key #2 (22-806328) but I am not sure...

http://www.perfprotech.com/store/assembly/Remote-Oil-Filter(Accessory-Kit),8182-280.aspx

The filter I have been using is 35-866340K01

Engine Serial Number is OL380364.

I know this should be simple but this has been a real pain and now the boat is out of commission until I can get all the correct parts and put it all back together.

I was hoping someone could verify the correct part number for the fitting and make sure I have been using the correct filters.

Thanks for any help...

Engine serial number: 0L380364 Engine model number 4M32027M1 1999 MERCRUISER MEFI 3, BRAVO 3, 5.0L BRAVO EFI engine.

So yes, Your engine does have electronic fuel injection.

Your engine has a throttle body, The throttle body kind of looks like a carb, But it has two fuel injectors.

When I look up your engine using your serial number, I also come up with Merc part number (806328) for that same oil filter fitting.

The other style they had was number 18 in that link you posted, But it does not match up with your engine serial number, The only way you could have had that style fitting is if your engine did not come with a remote oil filter and someone installed it after market and ordered the design 2 remote oil system. Did you scroll all the way down in your link and compare the difference between design 1 & 2???

But from what I can tell, your engine came with a remote oil filter system from new.

See number 3 in this link also, This is also your engine parts using your serial number, And it shows the same photo that I see when looking it up in the dealer parts program.

Hope this helps, Good luck with it.:smt001

Great Thank You!! I feel more confident that I am looking at the right part now (806328).

I did compare design 1 and 2. I believe I have 1 and I am sure that this remote oil reservoir is factory installed.

Am I using the correct filter (35-866340K01)? I see the part number in the link you have given is different?

Thanks again.

Side note - So is MPI or EFI better???

Yes the oil filter number you are using should be safe to use on your engine.

The Main difference between the two filters is the "Q" Is for the "quicksilver" brand, And it come in a white color, And the filter with the "K" in it is the newer "mercruiser" brand oil filter, And it comes in black.

All the threads in the those filters listed will be the same size, The only other thing that may have changed with all those numbers listed is the length of the filter just a little bit so that they will have enough clearance room to either install it if it sits up right, Or if it sits upside down it will need to clear the engine hatch cover, ect.

As for the EFI/MPI, The MPI is just newer technology to try to get the engine to run better/smoother ect.

The MPI has more fuel injectors aimed at each cylinder, and a different air flow path to try to make it run better, You know just more technology to go bad on you over time.:smt043J/K:lol:

Your system is kind of like a carburetor set up, There is nothing bad about your system it works very well also.

Enjoy your boat.:smt001

Don't forget the seal 26-42077 I have the same boat and motor. I had to replace one of the lines from the remote filter to the block last week. (slight leak) Wish they designed the filter up-side down. Kind of a mess changing the filter. Great boat. Enjoy. Jerry

Thanks Guys!! Looking forward to easier oil changes in the very near future.

I also ordered the oil drain hose kit that can be fed through the bilge drain. I think that will let me get more of the oil out of the pan and reduce the mess.
