We are planning our summer trip and need some local knowledge as to where to stay. We are leaving Edgartown MV on 6/28 and planning to travel to northern CT are as we have reservations at Mystic Seaport 6/30 & 7/1. We want to be back in Edgartown on July 4th for the festivities. We prefer moorings and have traveled to these ares before but it's been awhile. Long Island is very foreign to us as far as where to stay, getting around etc. any help would be much appreciated. :smt100

There are moorings in west harbor on Fishers Island - not much to do there though, but fun for a day - if your only going as far west as mystic, try watch hill RI/Napatree beach area - If I were doing the trip id hit Block island - great anchorage (gets really busy the week of the 4th) - depending on the winds (favorable in the prevailing southwesterlies), anchor outside the breakwater at old harbor instead of the salt pond - this makes sense do to based on the direction your coming from. Or you could do cuttyhunk too. So many great places to choose from.

We've been to Block several times so we're going to skip it this trip. We are going to visit Cuttyhunk later in the season. Any Long Island suggestions?

New London has revitalized its downtown and has new town docks - norwich has a nice marina with easy casino access - saybrooke point marina is nice, or Hamburg cove - really need to know how far you want to go - greenport? Montauk? Anywhere further might be pushing it on your timeframe.....staying close - have you done Newport, jamestown, dutch harbor, wickford....

It sounds like a great trip.

Mike gave you a good start. I'll just add that Fishers Isl is very nice and peaceful spot if you just want to relax and enjoy the scenery. There's only one marina and not much on land as it's all private properties. We usually just drop the hook as the harbor is well protected. You can take the dinghy to explore the area. There's a small island just to the West of Fishers where people go for few hours.

LI - OMG, there are tons of cool places, so it all depends on how far W/SW you're looking to go. The closest ports not to be missed:

On the SW side:
Montauk
Shelter Isl
Sag Harbor
3 Mile Harbor
Greenport

On the LIS side (you would need to head much further West):
Port Jeff
Huntington
Oyster Bay
Northport
Port Washington

I guess this is plenty to fill up your itinerary.

There's also small anchorage just outside the Sterling harbor. You can also do to Daring Harbor (Shelter Island) anchor there and have quick dinghy ride to Greenport.

Check the clearance, the bridge in Sag is low and it's fixed. I need at least mid tide to make it under, low tide is preferred.
