Heavy weather moved in fast!

as i said in my original post that started this thread, i did let the ones know around me. They just ignored the warning because of the beautiful day it was. I could see first hand on the screen in front of me what was coming at us. I can't make them leave.

shame on them!!!

You could see this coming a long time before it hit. Well, at least 20-30 minutes anyway. We were down in the Colonial Beach area and had ample warning. Just look at the sky. If the wind starts to pick up, even a little, start looking for dark clouds. They were there. A full 25 minutes after seeing them, they were on us. We pulled anchor about 10 minutes before it hit us (we knew we could not have made it back to the slip in time), turned the bow into it and rode it out at about 8 knots. No problem, no issues. Just gotta keep your head about you and enjoy the ride. The rain bypassed us so it was just a lot of wind. I mean A LOT! Nice to have that thick isenglass on the bridge... :)

Alex, yup, that makes sense.

RedHook, I've done the same thing. Around here storms blow in very quickly, as they do in many areas. That the bad news. The good news is they also move on very quickly and are normally gone in short order.

I'm always amazed at the number of people (usually in smaller boats) who, on a day when all the warning signs are present, stay on the water until it's too late then make a mad dash to get back to the launch ramp.

Go Figure.

Having the weather option installed on my Raymarine C80 paid off yesterday....

Bill,
Thanks for pointing this out. It looks like a nice setup and might work for my C70 as well. Could you tell me what you pay for monthly subscribtion?

Here is a link http://www.sirius.com/servlet/Conte...c=FlexContent&cid=1139320916898&flash=noflash

I am not sure it works with the C70 series though, I believe it is only C80 and E series. I would check on that with RayMarine.

I keep mine on all the time while boating, so it is not just another toy for me. One of the best "mods" I made to the boat in my opinon. When you put it in "animate" mode you can see how fast the weather is coming at you, so when you see a a big blotch of green with yellow and red mixed in moving in your direction.... it's time to go!

Here is a picture if a storm coming up on us last season, but we were safe in the marina: http://gunpowdercove.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=47235274

They have setup for C70 as well:

Did you have to install the antenna as well? As I understand it needs it's own antenna, the module and the cables. Am I missing anything?

Yes I did, but I just replaced the old Sirius radio antenna with the new one. I wired in the radio output from the SR50 into my Clarion aux input and use the C80 to select my radio stations.
BTW I see the price dropped, when I got mine two years ago it was $700.

Bill, does the antenna comes with the package or is it somethig to be purchased seperatelly?

That storm was long and nasty. There should have been several hours notice as it approached the east coast. I left Fairmont, WV on Sunday heading for the Chesapeake and southern Maryland. As soon as we got on 68E through northern Maryland, that storm sucked us up. Heavy rain, lots of wind, thunder and lightning. Unfortunately, we kept pace with it and it rained like that the entire way east and then south...until we got within 10 minutes of our house...and it stopped. Not a drop there. But what is normally a 4-1/2hr trip took 7.

On the iphone I like the "The Weather Channel MAX" app. It has a future predictor mode. While not 100% accurate it will give you a ball park as to when the weather will be on you. What I do I when it's running I note the time of the first prediction which is usually the current state, I then compare it to the current state and take the hours from there as to the WHEN the storms will be in the area and plan accordingly. Then I just monitor current conditions through the day and get going if stuff is on the way.

Man those storms were terrible I was down at the boat hanging at the pool with the kids. I saw the line moving in and told the kids let's go I am on call andgoing to get called into work. Sure enough as soon as they hit I got called, again, and again. 200 people, 1000, people, 5000 people, 16000 people without lights, all in a matter of 20 minutes.. Took us till end of day Tuesday to clear up the trouble...

Bill's weather is the best. Always current and with lighting data. I wonder about wind speeds. I see for the iphone there is another app with wind field speeds that would be great to know as well..

Tom,

It will give you wind speed and direction, but the feature I like the most is the “animate” feature. It will take Doppler Radar image “snapshots” and display them on the screen along with time information. In that way you can get a real good idea of just how fast the storm is moving. Although this cell was not big (by our local standards), it was large enough to cover our area and it was moving really fast.

I am sure the ones that stayed rafted up at Hart Miller took a beating, at least for a few minutes.

Hope all is well with you and the family.

Bill,

How's the response time, meaning when you navigate trough the pages does it paint the image fast enough? Sometimes it's a pain to wait for weather.com images to show up, if the cell signal is not very strong.

Also, does the system have a feature which can automatically display or sound an alert if a storm approaches near by? I'm talking about the feature that Gary described having on the new Standard Horizon VHF, which despite what channel it's on it'll broadcast an alert.
