Travelers will have a new way to get from Miami to Bimini later this year: a ferry, set to launch in June.
The 450-passenger ferry, operated by Balearia Ferry Group from Spain, will shuttle passengers between the Port of Miami and the Bahamian island six times a week. The trip will take about an hour and a half.
Leslie C. Bethel, president of Notarc Management Group, a firm that is working with Balearia, said information about bookings and a final start date is still pending. Promotional roundtrip fares are expected to start at $69-$79 plus tax per person.
News of the ferry came Friday as owners of Bimini Bay Resort & Marina held a press conference to announce plans for a beach club to open this year and a hotel and spa opening in 2014. Colorado-based hotel company RockResorts, a subsidiary of Vail Resorts, took over management of the resort community’s vacation rentals, dining operations and the marina on March 1.
