Headed to Watch Hill, RI area next weekend. Will be docked on the Pawcatuck River.

Looking for:
1.) A decent deep water ramp in the area

2.) Gunkholes - AKA nice beach spots to hit up

3.) Waterside attractions. Is Fisher's Island worth a trip?

Thanks,

Chuck

Napatree Beach is one of my all time favorites. Just anchor on the north side (watch the shoaling) and have at it.

You might also cruise over to the Mystic River - it's idyllic. Near the mouth of the river you can stop for lunch at Abbott's Lobster in the Rough or you can cruise up river to the town of Mystic and Mystic Seaport.

We always skip Fisher's Island, but some people like it.

I would use the free public launch in Stonnington......Its right across from Napatree beach and Sandy point.....AWESOME area.
SeaGull is right on with the Mystic River....Just gotta wait for the drawbridge.

Sea Gull and Weave, thanks so much. This is exactly what I was hoping for.

Watch Hill .
I will recommend you NOT go to the Tea house in Watch Hill.
I was there a few years ago on our way back from Block Island. The wives went ahead to the Tea Room while the dads watched the kiddies on the merry-go-round.
The Tea Room would not seat a party of ten nor would they let us break up into two parties of five or anything else? Huh..??
They said we would be too disruptive..???? They haven't even seen us yet???? Only two of the (sober) sweet young girls in our party. Long story short I/we will never go to Watch Hill again..

Too bad as it is a nice place to anchor.

Yes thats the launch....Great ramp but that whole area can be shallow and dead low tide just something to think about. There is plenty of parking spaces as well.

Air O is right on that as well, Watch Hill on land can be stuffy but it depends on what you're looking for.
I have had some good lunches at Skipper's Dock on headed toward Mystic. They have a nice long finger dock to park at and eat out on the patio

Skippers is on your starboard as you enter Stonington harbor, great place to eat and is right around the point to the entry of the channel that leads to sandy point(good place if you have a dog) and napatree. I strongly reccomend you only enter and exit Watch Hill thru this channel and not the unmarked channel on the imed. south side of napatree, even tho you will see locals going this way and it is much quicker getting in and out. Do not go this way.Dogs not allowed at nap. point between 8 and 6pm. This is a beach area and Watch Hill is so tiny it will take you yust a few minutes to walk the whole town area. Nice to see and there are a couple nice somewhat pricey places to eat. Fishers Isle nice to boat around and look at the mansions but very private and the only place to go ashore really is east harbor, which has a bar. If you've vever been to mystic, It's very close, and great place to spend a weekend Ric

Thanks Katricol, Weave and Air O'. This is the type of stuff I needed.

Anytime Chuck....Last year was the first trip to the salt and we had chosen Watch Hill Napatree/ Sandy point and fell in love with the beaches and boating in that area. It was quite a change for us.
Let us know how your trip went and post some pics!

This was a great thread! I was born and raised in Westerly and grew up boating from Pawcatuck river all around Fishers Island sound. I learned a bunch of places to go that I haven't been (bar in East Harbor and Skippers). I live in Virginia now but visit my Mom every summer with Slap Shot in tow. I totally agree with comment about Tea Room ... they've always been snobs! The ice cream shop is cool though. Also, I used the "cut" between Napatree Pt and Sandy Pt for years but hit bottow with my 21' ... go around as recommended!!

We had a great time, but alas, not very good weather. We did a trip over to Mystic. Pulled into Watch Hill, where we came across this storied beauty.

Her history is here http://www.brooklinboatyard.com/aphrodite.html

Sunday, when we left the winds kicked up to gale force. Made for an interesting departure and loading at the boat ramp.

Planning to head back there in August or September as we now have family on the river with a private dock :smt038.

Thanks everyone for the great tips. Just too bad the weather was a grump.

That is one Beautiful yacht.
