I am preparing for winterizing the boat (it took me a while to be able to say that). I heard there are mixtures people make and add to their head systems for the final ride of the season and then get the last pump out.

I would love some ideas - would love to keep the smell down over the winter.

Thanks!!

Last winter was my first. All I did was pump it out, put the "usual stuff" in it. I did flush the toilet maybe 3-4 times with the pink AF in it and left it alone. No smell whatsoever.

From Dometic User Manual on Winterization:

If using antifreeze to winterize the holding tank system, use only propylene glycol freshwater antifreeze that does not
contain alcohol. Antifreeze that contains alcohol will result in damage to your sanitation system.
1. Pump out holding tank.
2. Thoroughly flush the system with fresh water before adding propylene glycol freshwater antifreeze to the HTS.
3. Turn off electrical power.

I've heard good things about fabric softener so I'm going to give that a whirl this year. I normally put in a ten pound bag of ice with enough water to cover and a couple cups of bleach then drive around. I'll do the same this year but do it twice. Once with softener then with bleach. Adds a pump out but hey-I'm ok with a $10 experiment.

We use fabric sheets under the mattress. No idea if it does any good but does not harm things.
Pull the mattress away from the walls to allow a bit of air between the wall and mattress.

After flushing and pumping and adding some antifreeze I add Thetford Chemical Aqua-Kem 6 in both boat and RV. Works for me.

I have always just flushed some A Freeze down after a good pump out/clean. Never really noticed a "smell" Not sure if it helps or not, but once someone told me to dry out bowl after A Freeze and put in about 1 cup of vegatable oil in bowl, supposed to keep seals soft ? I have done that for many years, not sure if it helped, but hasn't hurt. I have never had to replace a seal ?? Was going to try the fabric softner trick next spring and let it sit in the lines for a month or so.

How do you get a bag of ice into the tank? Flush it? Or are you not talking about a vaccuflush?
