I don't often post but I enjoy following many of your post. I have a 1995 300d and rarely use the onboard head but have a occasional strong odor that seems to build. I notice it mostly if I open the galley cabinet or head cabinets under the sink areas, or when I flush the head weekly to keep water flow operstional.Any suggestions on where to look? I keep the tank as empty as practical and with some fresh water and odor control.

Have you checked the charcoal filter on the vent from the holding tank? Also - as the hoses age they can allow odors so if they are original it may be part of the problem as well.

Thanks for quick response, how would I check the filter? I know it is at least 9 years old.

What if the system is 5 yrs old and never been used? We plan to us it in a couple weeks. What needs to be done or checked to make sure the system is operational?

I just did this modification on my filter... http://www.jetScreenshot.com/demo/20090426-e25-646kb.jpg Worked out great!

Edit: I got the pellets PETCO Activated Carbon 28 oz. SKU: 287571 $9.99 and the open cell filter material for each end of the PVC tube I cut out of Petco - HGN-Fluval 104 Media Filter material $3.99

Looks like a good idea to me, I need to see if I can buy the pellets locally?

FYI - your hoses may be permeated. I had to replace the hoses on my 1992 due to this. The hoses for the head system and the hoses for the galley were permeated.

Place a wet rag on the hose and come back tomorrow and smell it. If you throw up, change the hoses along with the filter!

Trouble with lightly used heads is waste tends to sit in the hoses and tank. Waste eventually permeates the materials and they give off the stink. Once that happens the only solution is to replace them. To help prevent waste from sitting in the hoses be sure to flush a few extra times once your trip is over, and keep it pumped out.

If you have guests aboard never assume the head hasn't been used...
