Is it a good day trip? Now that I'm closer, Havre de Grace seems like a reasonable destination. Is there anywhere to tie up for a few hours, or is just a marina thing? Restaurants? Bars? Any/all ideas welcome.

Tim,

I could recommend the Tidewater Grille. The view is great and the food and service have always been good when we have gone there. I would just check to see how much water is at their pier - I know it can get shallow up in those parts... Also there is, or used to be an aviation club with some sea planes next door which is interesting to watch.

Have fun!!

There is a public dock right near the lighthouse for day trips. Not sure of the cost if any and how fast it fills etc. The dock will accomodate various size boats. The Teraupin (spelling?) is a good restaurant/bar in tow. Lots of other places too. Well worth the trip.

I know you can tie-up at Tidewater not a whole bunch going on, you can walk the very small town and see the decoy museum Or you can head right-up the NE River and chill at the Goose.

We have anchored off the Tidewater Grill, and slightly upstream, twice overnight. There is an unofficial dinghy beaching area at the end of the street that runs along the north side of Tidewater - just tie off to a bush. Marina is very nice with an excellent ship's store - I believe it's HDG Yacht Basin. There is an excellent multi-floor antique mall in town, in an old canning factory, as well - at least there was two years ago. Check out the fishing battery with the dinghy on the way up the channel. We are going back to HDG again this year on our trip in July. Definitely worth a stop!

Feels weird me giving you destination advice on the Chesapeake Tim!

Let me know when you're going Tim, I've been there for day trips many times but never overnight. I was thinking about staying at Penn's Beach Marina sometime this summer.

I stayed two nights at Tidewater marina over Memorial wknd.(transient @ 1.50 ft) No bugs and quiet. We also went down last wknd for one night. We went to Macgregors restaurant to hear a band Sat night. They have a deck that overlooks the water.I've been to the Tidewater grill too. They have good food. Both places get pretty busy at times.

This is from a couple years ago but...

There's no pool...

The marina has the best marine store I've seen. Better than any West Marine. Very hard to get fuel if your boat is "too big".

Close to town but there is not much "town". However, this is probably the best port for provisioning I've seen on the bay. They have an awesome farmers market on Saturday morning with stuff brought in from the local area (PA/MD farm country). The Silver Queen corn, tomatoes, blueberries and other fresh produce in July is to die for... and the Amish get angry when you take their pictures at the market. There is also a good grocery store right outside the marina gates... You can have a great meal on your SOLAIRE GRILL that night.

We'll make this a Friday night/Saturday morning stop over on our trip this summer... not much there to stay more than that. They did have some sort of car show there when we were there so you may want to check their calendar of events to see what is happening when you want to go:

My 2 cents.

Thanks to all for the advice. I'm mainly looking for a place to tie up or anchor for the day. Sounds like there are some options.

We used to do day trips to Annapolis from RH, but now that we're up further, I'm looking at HdG and Chesapeake City as possible day trip destinations. By that I mean something that you do when you have guests on the boat and you want to "take them somehwere" but you want to send them home (or to their hotel) at the end of the day:grin:.

I also need to check out this "Sand Island" that I've heard about on the way up the channel. Sounds like my kind of partay!

Gary- when is your trip this year? Maybe we need to schedule another Stillpond raft up...

I know you're just dying to take Four Suns back there.

It'll be July... Doing a month on the bay again... I'll bring my Stihl chainsaw with the tree trimmer attachment so I can get back there without scratching my strataglass.

The tree limb has dropped a bit over the winter and is now more of a "hull toucher" than a "bridge toucher". Your strata will be safe...

That sand island is to port as you are inbound on the channel. You can't miss it. Best to approach it from below as there is some shoaling in the front of it, you veer off the channel as you approach. We used to be able to nudge up there with the sailboat you shouldn't have any issues. You will take some wakes but you are far enough off the channel that it's not too bad and traffic is not usually too much. Nothing like sailing out the channel with a barge coming in as you feel your way along..

As for public docking I am not sure as we were in Tidewater back then. The city marina may have some docking available???

There is that unofficial anchorage that Bill mentioned, can't miss it it is above the mooring field for Tidewater, you will usually see a few sailboats anchored there, good depth and good holding. You can then dinghy into Tidewater Grill. I don't believe there is enough water there for you to bring your boat in there.

We're heading down to the Bay this weekend. Friday and Saturday at Rock Hall and Baltimore. Sunday we're thinking of going to HDG - never been there before. We're just going to be there for the day - thinking of grabbing a slip at Tidewater Marina ($20 for the day) so we can walk around the town a bit. We have a 6-year old and a 3-year old - can they handle the walk to town? It doesn't appear to be more than a half mile (looking at the charts), but I'm curious what any of you think.

In the afternoon/early evening, we're going to head back over to the Eastern shore for the night (anchored somewhere) since Monday we'll put the boat back on the trailer at Elk Neck SP. It's been a while for me, but I'm thinking either just inside the Sass River (behind Ordinary Point) or Still pond. Any recommendations/thoughts?

Dennis,

I can't be any help in regards to the local knowledge, but with kids it's very individual. Some will have no problem and some will whine from the first three steps. If it's a boring walk try to find something to entertain them or just pick a cool story to tell along the way, the time will fly as you'll have their minds somewhere else. It might be a good idea to bring one compact stroller, just in case.

Have fun

Excellent point, Alex... Keep their minds busy during the walk. I think we will throw a little stroller in with the rest of the gear, too. Good idea. The 6-year old can always go on my shoulders.

Dennis,
Enjoy your trip this weekend.
Starting North and working south, Lloyds Creek just inside the Sass) shouldn't be a problem for you to get into just keep to port through the cut. Still Pond is always nice and calm and provides solid bite for your night on the hook, and if you work your way down as far as Fairlee Creek, there's plenty there for the kids to do on shore with the blow-up water activities every weekend, and the bands in the evening. Look me up on B-dock if you get to Fairlee. We're usually at Still Pond during the days.

Thanks for the tips, Joe. The tentative plan is to be at Still Pond before dinner time. My boat is the one w/o a name on the back, yet (haven't done the renaming ceremony, yet!). If plans change and we head down to Fairlee, I'll definitely find you.
