Unbelievable....it's actually documented...There's one for your book Gary!!!!

I can’t believe you found it. Check out the owner information, he will not need to worry about issuing a “May Day” call. Anything happens to his boat he can just walk on water.

Only for others........Twice for rental PWC's that hit other boats - nobody had a radio, and once for a family of 12 who stuffed the bow of a rental canbote in the wake of a drive or crew boat - his radio was too wet to work. I had to tell the CG to send 2 inflatables or their 41ft. CG Cutter so they could hold them all. You ever had to deal with 12 overweight women who are soaking wet because Bubba wouldn't slow down?

You are right Gary.....you just can't make this stuff up.

Also, we have relayed 3-4 mayday's for other boats out of range of the CG station.

........Gotta love boating in a tourist area!

i called one in when a drunk guy in a speedo jumped off his sailboat in the east river on July 4th. He finally made it to Roosevelt Island in a 5knt current. He was arrested on the island and everyone on their boats cheered.

Never had to call in a Mayday or Securitay. But once, in summer, in the inlet at Maryland, I was in a rowboat with a 7hp outboard, trying to cross the inlet from Assateaque to Ocean City, the current was so strong I had to steer 45 degrees off course to compensate for the current. I almost hit a channel bouy....is that the same as taking a pole? LOL. Just a lil humor (but true) and a short story. :wow:

No, but I saw a boat in the Inner Harbor marina a year back. The boats name was “Mae Dae”. I thought what a stupid name for a boat, how would you hail her?
It is, these are the naming rules from the USCG naming site for documented vessels, "The name may not be identical, actually or phonetically, to any word or words used to solicit assistance at sea".

I wonder if she would answer if I hailed her by “M.” “D.”

“osd9” found the name was documented as well, how did that slip by?

Had to call for help one morning in Vermont. Was out in the 16' bowrider with my 2yo. Alternator seized. I really didn't care, but she got nervous and started to cry when I had to shut it down. Looked at the depth gauge. 425' of water and I only had 100' of anchor line. The wind was starting to blow and we were getting pushed down the lake. I called for help. Only a few boats on the lake that early. Flagged a few down. No one willing to tow us in. I really do not like Vermont.

About 33 years ago I was out in my wooden 18' Thompson lapstreak cuddy with a friend. I lived in Bayonne,NJ and moored the boat in Staten Island, NY. We were taking a daytime cruise around S.I. when the motor quit. We were just about under the Gothals Bridge and the current was screaming. We threw out the hook and tried to fix the motor but failed. I only had an old mini CB radio tucked away and we wired it into the battery and called a land 'may day' ("breaker one nine") to a daily commuter on the bridge who was kind enough to call the CG when she got home. Hours later, the CG boarded and towed us into Bayonne....behind a downtown chemical company that I used to work at.....just in time to punch in for the evening shift!

Aside from the illegality of it, it also demonstrates considerable immaturity and a lack of good judgement.

Lets add this to the Mae Dae tale.. she's for sale. $149,900.00

Yachtworld.com - "MAE DAE is a lightly used, mid-sized, maxi volume motoryacht with the accommodations and interior volume of some 48-50 footers -- but the ease of handling and lower operating cost of a 40 foot boat.

This would be the not to be hailed vessel... lol

The 392 Motor Yacht is one of Silverton's most popular models with over 600 produced. In addition to sleeping six adults, MAE DAE will cruise most large families in spacious comfort and/or entertain a crowd. Radar, generator, chartplotter, auto pilot, sundeck w/hard top, immaculate engine room, large swim platform. Don't miss her."
