I have to do something with my 268 weekender. Theres a couple of deep scratches in the gel coat. The blue portion of the boat is all fadded to the point u can see white in it. So my goal now is to sand the whole boat from the rub rail down. Fill in the scratches with marine bondo. Then paint the boat white and blue. I've painted cars and trucks in the past. My question is what type of sprayable paint should i use? Cars today use base coat and clear coat which holds up pretty well but i'm not sure how it will hold up to a marine enviroment.

Some of the best stuff out there is the two part epoxy paint such as Awl Grip. We had Sea Ray come in a year or so back to fix a problem and they sent in a team to paint the hull of 30' DA. I don't recall if they sprayed it or rolled/tipped it (I think they sprayed), but it can be done either way. Beautiful! Better than brand new gelcoat. A less expensive option is a one part paint like Easypoxy. It lays down very nicely, as well, and has a great shine.

Thanks for asking the question and thanks for the response. I am planning on painting my 1986 268 Sundancer sometime soon and have been looking at paint options. Was leaning toward Awl Grip, glad to have a recommendation to back it up.

I would go with DuPont Imron. Awl-Grip is good, but it isn't meant to be buffed, so if you get a scratch, or it starts to dull, you're stuck with it. Imron is also damn near indestructible.

A good quality two stage paint can be used on a boat. Most automotive body shop supply houses can guide you in the right direction when your ready. Touch up with a brush would be harder with a clear coat on the paint. if you know of a shop with a big enough booth they will spray it for you. Some of the bigger fleet truck repair shops will spray a boat if it is ready. After all alot of the parts on the trucks are fiberglass so they already know what they are getting into.

My boat is painted with AwlGrip. Beautiful finish, easy to maintian and will keep it's color for a long time. If I do get a scratch, it is a fairly easy touch up. So far (3rd year) it has held up well to lifts, moving 1800 miles on a semi, and still no scratches.
