The family and I are heading down to Key Largo this weekend and mooring at John Pennekamp. Has anyone done this trip before, ie how long will it take me if i head down on the outside vs the IC? Any cool spots to go for lunch etc? Thx

Good luck with the trip and one post per topic will suffice, thanks.

It's approximately 50nm from Port Everglades to John Pennekamp so I imagine you can make it in less than 2 hours on the outside via Hawk Channel. I have only taken the ICW as far south as Government Cut in Miami so I can't comment on Biscayne Bay, but ICW will be a lot longer depending on speed/bridge restrictions. If you go by ICW the water can get thin at Featherbed Bank and around Key Largo when you head SE into Hawk Channel so make sure you have your charts handy. I don't have a lunch spot recommendations.

Good luck, Art

Both ways are good. Lots of creeks and channels to cross over. ICW will be a smoother ride and about 30 to 45 minutes longer due to "Slow and No Wake Zones" around downtown Miami. Once you pass Downtown its smooth sailing until Key Largo. Just heave Art's advise and keep an eye on your charts, GPS and depth finder. Water is shallow and it gets skinny quick.

In Key Largo you have Gilbert's, Alabama Jacks, Sundowners, and few others.

In the Keys be diligent of depth and poor marked channels.
