The product description does not indicate that the product must be in the water to function, ie; if it is used in a boat it is recomended that the depth finder be placed in a plastic bag filled with water then placed against the hull for a "through the hull reading" it appears this product would work fine if your vessel was sinking. This product might work fine if you boat is built close to the water so you can drag it along by hand. It appears this product is an underwater transducer attached to the readout. To be fair, this product would probably work fine for swiming and diving but living in Michigan that is a few months away. It appears to be well built for it's intended use as an underwater instrument.

I got one and it works great for knowing how much line to use for crab/shrimp pots out of my dingy. Mine doesn't stay on constantly, you push the button and it's on for about 30 seconds then shuts off automatically so I don't think it would be good for using as your main depth sounder on your big boat. But it is very well built and waterproof.

Two of my usual travelling companions each have one and it works great for them for exploring around anchorages and determining safe zones. Seems to be pretty accurate. Also gives temperature.

For me, it's great to keep an eye on tides when anchored (without having to run up to the bridge for depth). Also has a temp gauge (hit the button a second time for temp). Nice little gadget to have.

It's a great device, but the uses are limited. A friend has one and he uses it for setting his crab pots.

setting crab pots, 2nd guessing the on board depth gauge, for use in the dinghy, for $ everyone should carry one.....
