I have been planning a family trip to Catalina for the past few months. I finally got a few days where my wife and Kids (young adults) were available.
A friend and I were running the boat up the coast (90 miles), and my wife and kids would meet me there later, via ferry.
We left yesterday, and the combination of a big swell, and wind chop 90 degrees off that were combining to create some craters. We took a good pummeling, and lost the coffee maker (that was a hard hit).
I am not a big drinker, but I was still recovering from a hang over from my sons graduation party, and when I went below it hit me like a rock. Spent the next hour with my head in a bowl. We still had a good 60 plus miles to go, and at the reduced speed, it would require another 6 hours to get there.
The boat was getting hammered, and so was I, so I had to tell my buddy we needed to abort. I was also concerned I would be dehydrated and sick while on a mooring out there for the next few days, and not able to function. Man, that was a tough decision. A few years ago I would have kept going, but I am finally figuring it out, it’s a marathon, not a 100 yard dash.
A good learning experience overall.
