Had a visitor this morning

We live near the Columbia River (150 yards) and have Canada geese in the yard all the time because my wife feeds them. Usually a few ducks and pelicans to go along with them. We also have a pair of bald eagles that have a nest about 1/2 mile upstream from us. And the assorted squirrels, an occasional racoon and tons of song birds.

Yesterday Tina was walking by the river and spotted some unusual birds. She got close enough to take a pic and showed it to me when she got home. They turned out to be Black Capped Night Heron. Never seen them around here before.

When we moved in here about 17 years ago there were no pelicans. Now we have a sizeable flock that inhabits an island on the Snake River. Fun to watch them cruise along, just above the river surface.

I once read hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animals. They’re psycho. Even the crocs and lions won’t mess with them.
And they as fast as a horse for a short distance.

This Blue Heron was a daily visitor to our yard every morning for many years. It would show up at the end of April and leave in late November. We had a dozen or so Bald Eagles that stayed nearby year round. They would hang out at our dock in the winter because of the open water around it. Also had the song birds. Our yard was like a wildlife preserve.
