Grinding noise

Hi all!

Took the boat out today, had a blast! However, when I was flushing it at home, I noticed a sound from the motor that just didnt sound right. It gets a bit louder as you advance the throttle, its kind of like a grinding sound from the outdrive. I didnt notice any performance issues while I was on the water. Usually I only hear the exhaust when I'm flushing but this was a bit different. Is this my engine getting older or do you think I have a problem?

Thanks!

J

How many hrs are on your motor/drive?
I have about 60 hrs and I also noticed a different noise the last time I flushed in the driveway. Almost sounds like somthing turning in the upper part of the drive and it need grease. I shot a few shout of grease thru the starboard zerk on the drive.. Havent checked it yet again.....

MY sound cant really be heard from inside the boat. You have to be closer to the drive. I figured it cause the gears and shafts are getting broke in:huh::huh:

I have just over 100 hours on my boat/motor....you just described my issue to a T. I dont know, but it sounds just like you said, like something is spinning that needs grease. Hopefully it's not anything too big. I want to go out again on Sunday.

If you rev in neutral, do you hear the sound? If yes, it's engine, if not, it's outdrive.

I blew my outdrive last summer (1992 boat), and the symptom was grinding noise.

How long had it been grinding? Mine does it in neutral and it seems to get louder as I advance my throttle to 1800 RPMs to flush the motor. I dont hear it in the engine bay, only back near the out drive.

So I called MM about the sound and they asked if I could bring it down to allow them to check it out, which was pretty cool of them vice just saying "dont know, want to make an appointment....it really seemed like they gave a crap that I was taking the family out tomorrow. They slid me into a spot and I rolled down. They hooked it up to the rabbit ears, I explained the sound in great detail.....of course the sound wasnt as loud as before (and I started it just before I left to be sure it was doing it, and it was...I even called Kim out to make sure she heard it. She did.) Anyway, they lowered the drive, cranked her up and had my daughter turn the wheel all the way left and all the way right as it ran. He said that when some part is going bad it will be rough when its cranked all the way to the left or right position. Nothing seemed to be wrong. He actually engaged my prop out of the water(something I've never done) and listened to it. It looked good, shifted smooth as butter into gear. He unscrewed a large flathead screw on the right side of my clutch and made sure it had oil. It did. He also unscrewed something much lower and made sure no oil was present, it wasnt.

So, he said that he felt that it was good. I asked what to watch for and he said to watch for the lube to drop quickly, any BIG sounds while shifting, etc....He said that most B3's make a little thump or a small noise when it shifts into gear but mine doesnt, its extremely smooth.

When I ran the motor, I placed my ear against the upper box on the drive (where the clutch is) and it sounded like that was where the noise was coming from. I explained that to him. He was explaining how the clutch worked in there and he felt that there was nothing wrong with it.

I guess a good thing is that I took it to him and the certified mech said that he doesnt see anything coming. I had the 100 hour service done about 20 hours ago so I'll be covered if anything goes wrong.

You may want to take a look at those things, never know, you might find something.

As for me, I'll be on the water tomorrow!

Thanks for the post. I guess Ill check my oil and take a better listen next time I flush
