My last boat was a houseboat and we used a green egg because we had plenty of room. But now we need advice on a smaller grill. Most of the time it will be two of us sometimes four.
Been looking at the Magna ll also considering the infrared option. Anybody offer any advice on these or other manufactures? A few questions do both use the same type small gas bottles? Any difference in the amount of gas they use? Ease of cleanup? One cook better than the other? Durability?
Thanks ,
Ray

I have the smaller square magna and love it. It is a bit pricey for what it is but I will say it cools down so fast after use for storage it's worth it. I don't know how a grill can cool down so fast

We do all our grilling at the dock. I bought a stainless Master Forge from Lowes and made a bracket to mount it on a Magma pedestal mount on the swim platform. Use a 10 lb tank and the whole seebang stows well in the dock box when not in use. A tip for the tank is to put car door trim (wallyworld) around the base. Keeps any rust stains off the platform. Works for the deck at home too!

Careful, many marinas frown on grilling at the dock on your boat.
Most contracts state no open flame is allowed. I never thought of a grill as an open flame but, many dockmasters disagree..

Magma for me......does a great job...even heat and never had wind blow out the flame....cooks a couple nice New York strip steaks in no time.....

Several in our crew have the kettle style Magmas and our shared experience is difficulty controlling heat--it runs from "really hot" to "extremely hot." The folks who have rectangular Magma models (don't know whether they're Gourmet, Connoisseur, or Adventurer) have a much easier time managing the heat.

We use the round rail mount because it allows us to relocate the grill easily, as most often we're rafted with other people. With a couple of minutes' adjustment, we can mount it to either a grab rail or a bimini pole, hang it over the side or over the swim platform, etc. Consider stowage, too, if you haven't already. We leave the mount attached and fit it into the deck compartment with our water heater. (If we had to assemble it every time, First Mate would be much less tolerant of grilling!!!)

I use a Webber Q and stand in the cockpit

My marina does not allow grilling on the dock, but is OK with it on the boat.

Magma rectangular cooks everything from breakfast to dinner-sausage to burgers to fish to steaks. The most used accessory on our boat.

We were on private family property this year so we only used the boat grill twice this year and I'm still very happy with it.
I have cooked for 8 on it before during the 4th fireworks. I have the Magma catalina and love it. smallest one with 2 levels. I heard the infrared ones cook too hot and the bride is picky with her steaks so I opted for the standard one. cooks amazing, almost never flares up, only blew out once but I have doing 26 -28knts with a cross breeze while my buddy cooked dogs on the back. opted for rob holder mounts and I had to install rod holders for grill and table.

Thanks for the replies! Looks like a Magma is the way to go. Any thoughts on the infrared versions? Anybody using one of these?

You just have to love the judge. What a great breed of dog!

Hahaha...I've forgotten how much fun Gary (Four Suns) was. I wish he had more time to post again. Anyway, I loved our Magma Newport.
