My Eagle Seacharter 500CFD bit the dust this season, and so I'm going to have to buy a new GPS Fishfinder during the off season.

I'd like to keep my entire expense (the cost of the unit, installation, and any chart files I may need to buy) to under $1,000.

Any recommendations before I start my search?

I prefer Raymarine-free updates from your computer don't have to send it anywhere. I have the E120 W/ dsm300 and radar. Also have the 240 vhf W/ the second station down below. about 4-5 years now no problems and easy to use. I shopped on EBay and just waited for the right deal.
I have used Garmin and they are also a good unit.

I like the units I have because it ties into the Smart craft.
