Gps / chartplotter recommendations

The Auto Guidance is best used for unfamiliar areas, and with brain engaged. As noted, it does not necessarily guide you via navigation aids. Note that it also will not output waypoints for use by an autopilot. Garmin certainly doesn't want a skipper to set an auto guidance route, turn on the autopilot, and go below for a sandwich.

I mainly use my G2 Vision chart for the Mariner's Eye View and the Fish Eye view. Using the Fish Eye View in combination with the Sonar helps me stay on top of ledges at a constant depth when I'm fishing. Really a nifty feature.

B - I think the lack of waypoints and ignorance of buoys and recommended routes is its "fatal" flaw.

IMOH, a much better approach would be for it to set waypoints near visual references, giving the skipper assistance, without suggesting routes dangerously near hazards. I really don't understand that they were thinking when they create curved, waypoint-less routes. I suspect the engineers were more into computers than into boating. I hope this technology will evolve into something more useful and more safe.

Having said that, no matter what electronics are present at the helm, leaving them to make a sandwich is a whole other issue...

I agree on the view options - they're very cool.
