We were out enjoying a nice afternoon last thursday. The boat ran GREAT all afternoon. We dropped a couple buddies off at an abandon marina across the lake and headed back to the boat launch.

We made it about 1/4 of the way back and I loose all forward movement. My buddy who was with me is a marine mechanic so he instantly jumped to the back of the boat and got to work.

Still, no deals. We end up having to call his boss to tow us off the lake. Luckily he had a jet ski in the shop that needed a lake test. We got insanely lucky as 95% of michigan boaters are still in shrink wrap and there is no one on the lake to tow us in. :smt009

We tore down the outdrive on monday and discovered the gears under that top cover are stripped out. I mean completely wasted!

He's got his boss going through the outdrive checking it all out and hopefully it will only set me back a couple hundered and a case or two of beer.

Everyone's telling me "atleast you got it out of the way early".

I can't help but think "great whats in store for the rest of the summer".

Sorry about that! It is good to get this out of the way early in the season. Was it the prop's hub sleeve or something farther up?

You are cruising the bowrider this early in the season - hard core man!!! Even better - you got towed off by a waverunner!

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to outdrives. It was the gear that is attached to the driveshaft and the one it connects to. Like you pull that top over off with those 10mm 12pt bolts and their right there.

Yea, a bow cover would be nice this time of year. We were out on St pattys day and the day before as well. I guess there IS an upside to being unemployed.

The waverunner made things difficult once we got to the launch. BUT none of us got wet during the whole thing so it worked out. My buddy and his boss do alot of pickups and deliveries for their business so their pretty good at it lol. He'll his boss came out dressed like he was ready to head to the bar.

That sucks, but I agree. It's good to get this out of the way now. The problem is, unless they remove the coupler and everything is for a proper inspection you may have other issues, but hopefully this is all it is.

Best of luck.

yea, I was worried about that so i told him to go ahead and inspect everything.

hopefully ha.

I will be doing the bellows and gimbal bearing as well before the boat goes back together. Lets just hope everything under the engine cover stays sound this season.

Sorry to hear about your mechanical troubles. In reality, you'll be WAAAAAAYYYY ahead of the game if you get all that fixed for a couple hundred bucks....good luck. I am curious to see what the spent gears look like.

Sorry to hear about your misadventure. I got tired of being towed in near the end of the season. Traded that sterndrive boat for a inboard boat. No more tows! And my maintenance costs have gone down despite now having two engines instead of just one.

Best regards,
Frank

I was told i wasn't getting the gears back lol. My buddy's boss has a shelf in the show room kind of like a "parts of shame" wall.

And yes, i got hooked up GOOD! I still can't believe it. :wow:

My buddy took it to work with him yesterday and i watched his guy finish assembling it tonight. now thats fast service!

You remind me of my neighbor. I can hear it now when he comes out to open his cabin back up and I tell him the story.... "should have gone with an outboard". :smt009
