The Saturn CB290 came today and I’m very happy with the quality.
One question, do I need to register it and put numbers on?

if yes, do I contact the MD-DNR?

Bill.

In Canada you only have to register if the outboard is 10hp or more. Thus the 9.9hp motors and the fact that lots of people up here put 9.9 stickers on the old Evinrude and Johnson 15hp that were the same exact motor as the 9.9s except for carb and jetting.

Picking up a Honda 2.3 next week!
Bill it all depends on what your needs are. The worst thing is if you find out it's not enough and you then realize you made a mistake and should have bought a bigger motor.

If it were me I'd certainly get a bigger motor not only based on the size of the dinghy itself but as soon as you put people and gear in it you'll barely be able to get anywhere. Just make sure you're not being "penny wise and pound foolish" as they say.....

Weight is an issue on those dinghy motors. My engine has to come off when I pull the dink on the swim step. I got a 3.5 hp Tohatsu that weighs 28 lbs. I'd love a 9.9 but those are closer to 100 lbs.

yeah, i took the 9.8 on and off for a season. it weighs 86lbs but it was a nightmare

my new 20HP 4stroke is only 97lbs. Not that I'd want to be lifting it on and off either, but pretty amazing for a fuel injected 4 stroke

The good ole "my motor is bigger/faster" dinghy days. I too had a 3.5 Tohatsu on mine, and of course, everybody else was faster and they always wanted to race. I'd putz in 2-3 mins behind everyone. Strange how they always liked mine though when they needed to get to the "next dock/drink" and theirs was not available...

What make is your (4S) 20? It's pretty light.
I have a 6hp (2S) yamaha for my tender that is about 60 lbs. My new 25 merc weighs in at 190 lbs.

its a suzuki DF20A. The Suzuki 9.9, 15, and 20 are identical blocks and all weigh the same

What finally broke me and my 3.5hp was actually my kids. They finally got old enough that they were giving me grief every time we'd go into town on the dink. "why are we always getting passed, Dad" "is that max power, Dad". I just couldn't take it anymore.

I had zero complaints with the whole setup. Sometimes I miss the simplicity of popping the outboard off and flipping the dink up. But then I grab a beer and let my oldest drive me around on my Walker Bay and I tend to forget about the 3.5hp days :):)

Weight is def an issue with dinghy engines.....I did a bunch of research to figure out which 9.9 engine is lightest and came up with the Tohatsu MFS9.8BS at 81lbs.

We picked up a new 290 (Seabright) last year as well. Weight/performance was an important consideration for us as no davits. Normally throw it on the roof myself and stow motor on the deck. Boat is 86 lbs with the high pressure air floor and motor just under 60 lbs. Far from a speed demon but easily gets on step with a couple in it. It can get sketchy wide open with just one. A 20 would likely leave me behind in the water.

I ended up with a yami 25hp 2stroke on mine. Hard bottom is a must. My AB was rated at 15hp but preforms much better with 25 and the place I bought the boat from admitted after I did it lots of customers have done the same. Top speed I saw was 35.5. Won't do it now. That was too fast. It easily goes 30mph now. I always say a great dinghy is a must. I like to stay in remote places on the hook for up to 6 days at a time and the dinghy and a reliable gen is the ticket for me.

35mph? Good lord. I've had mine up to 27/28 and that's too fast to drink a beer man...

Our flat bottom air floor was sketchy anything past 15mph and with 2 adults. I could feel the floor bulge at the transom and never liked that very much

I’m very much looking forward to the difference in ride on the new RIB
