got smoke coming and strong fuel smell at startup

My plug is labelled "DIAGNOSTICS". There's a cap in the end of the plug. You have to pull the cap off. First time I thought I had the wrong cable but didn't realize the plug had to come off first. Pull off the plastic shield on top of the motor.

Is it worth it to have this?

One diagnostic visit from a Merc tech it just about pays for itself. HOWEVER, if you are not a DIY guy then you'll need the Merc tech anyway. In which case, it's probably not worth it. I keep it aboard all the time, along with a crummy old window XP netbook. Got the idea from mistercomputerman.

Thanks, I assume it's to the rear of the engine and ECM? I will confess I looked past anything capped.

I have a older Panasonic C19 toughbook...it's perfect for the boat. Rugged, water proofish :) and tiny like a net book.

BTW Ethan's Tank - If I get mine working, you're welcome to use it.

I have some smoke coming from my port engine, so I'm just as curious, hence my tracking of this thread.

They're all just sort of hanging around under the cover. See pic here, towards the bottom and center of the pic, with the blue tag. The cap is covering the actual plug. You have to lift the tab and pull the cap off. Be careful inserting the cable. you do NOT want to bend the prongs.

Ethan, apologies for the hijack of your thread!!!

Thanks ManCaveII, I'd be interested in how this works. Where in stafford are you? I'm in Aquia Bay Marina, K-nutz on the board is 2 slips down from me.

I'm at Hope Springs, right next door. I boatel it :) I can't bring myself to wet slip the beast just yet. I'll have it with me this weekend and if I get it going, I'll post here or PM you.

So I contacted my salesman at the dealership about the issue and he told me he would talk with the service manager, here is their wonderful reply:

Good morning, I have been advised by my service manager that your vessel is experiencing high fuel pressure. More than likely you will need fuel modules replaced and injectors sent out for cleaning (paint comes loose in them from fuel additives and can cause this issue). This service should be covered under your Mercury warranty, however travel time is not.

Someone mentioned it earlier in the thread that may be the issue. I'll still change out the plugs this weekend and maybe that will fix it, only because I don't know how long the work will take to pull the plugs and be out of a boat for the rest of this short season.

Ryan from selectmarine.net is a certified merc tech and from talking with him he knocks out work pretty fast. A lot of people on the boards recommend him so if you need warranty work I'm betting he could knock it out during the middle of the week for you. I have spoken with him a few times already and have some work lined up for the end of the season.

Damn. I bought all the tools recommended and after 2 hours I was only about to replace 4 plugs. Some of these were hitches to take out. Seems like I would have to take some of the hoses off, although they look like coolant lines and I wouldn't want to mess with those cause of introducing air into the lines. Anyone know of a sure way to get to the plug on the leftd side, 2nd from the front, sandwiched between 2 big hoses?. Or what that metal tank is on the front of the motor?
