They are great! I've had mine for a few years, no issues.

Is the hose end not stainless ? Or is there a stainless wear plate inside ?

I have had mine for 2 seasons now and have had no problems with them.

Had 4 of them fail in saltwater, inner seals leak exposing bearings to saltwater then the shaft just gets destroyed. Was a dealer for Hardin & they would not even return my calls. We no longer sell or service their products. Got stuck with several new pump service kits as when the shaft is no good you cannot use the kits. Very expensive lesson as we warrantied our work and replaced at our expense with Merc units.

Just curious as to why anyone would replace a POS design w/ a stainless steel POS design when better alternatives are available. Nothing personal, but, unless you race, remove and tear down after every few hours, the design is a nightmare on and off the water.

Wow..for the most part I've been hearing mostly good. Was this recent?

So what would you use? What is the better alternative for an 8.1?

Sherwood P110 or similar.

Do you have these on your boat? I would have to re-route my cooling line, find a correct mount, New belt when the pump is deleted ect...Can you show me someone that has done this on an 8.1?

Nothing personal BUT.. So where did you see your Sherwood ect.. on an 8.1. You said there are better designs. Can you show me part numbers? Or an application that it is working on a 8.1 Mercruiser?

They look well made and shiny. Compared to OEM is there a cost difference?
The inner race with the pump impeller and bearing/seal area look the same as on my 7.4. I had one seal fail at about 1600 hours. The failure destroyed the shaft and bearting. I was in a port on way to Alaska and there was a BIG BOAT with a crew beside me. I looked like their tender. Old Navy person ran the mechanical on the boat. Told him my problem and he said order 2new pumps and replace both pumps then keep the old one as a spare.
If the seal to the bearing fails it does not matter what the pump housing is made of the whole pump can be destroyed.

Maybe someone out there needs to come up with a retrofit kit / bracket. Looks like there are pumps with inlet and outlet in the right spot

saopm
I get the kit from Seara at WestMarine it includes the housing for the impeller for about $50.
I have never had to replace a housing. The only part that failed on me was the bearing.
We run in deep salt water so no silt or sand.

You keep referring to the 8.1L Mercruiser. Is there something special about the 8.1L motor that sets it drastically apart from other GM engines? I honestly do not know.

Here is a link to something a bit beefier than an 8.1 using a crank mounted pump.

At the time of the post, he had 13 years on the setup.

If you look on the Offshore only site, you will find more than a handful of go fast drivers who have swapped out their Merc pumps for crank pumps on there BBC engines. Mostly 7.4's. Some highly modified.

You could also call Michigan Motorz dot com. They have kits for conversions.

To answer your question regarding my boat. No. I do not have the conversion. My pumps are original, in good shape and the impellers were changed when the engines were out of the boat.

When the pumps go south the conversion will be made....providing I still have a boat. My marina caught fire this morning and I don't know when I will be able to get in there to assess damage as the fire department must investigate the cause to determine accident or arson.

The Volvo 8.1 equivalent ran a crank mounted pump.
